It with you" but you can have a personal hand in the dis posal of your worldly belong ings if you have a bonafide will. Oregon families are of fered information on wills as a help In financial planning in a new Oregon State uni versity extension bulletin, "A Will of Your Own." The bulletin was produced as part of the OSU Extension Service program in family fi nance. It wus written by Mrs. Dorothy Sherrill Miller, ex tension home management specialist, and has the ap proval of the Oregon State bar and its committee on pub lic service. In 20 pages, families can learn basic information about wills as a means of distribu ting their estate, become fa miliar with legal terms com monly used in estate plan ning, and prepare themselves for a visit to a lawyer in the event they wish to have a will of their own. Not Legal Advice Information in the bulletin Is written to help Oregon fam ilies understand certain sim ple facts about wills and transfer of property. It is not meant to give legal advice or answer complicated legal questions. These should be handled by a lawyer. According to the author, al most everyone intends to make a will before he dies, but court 'records show that only about half of those with good intentions ever make one. For most people, "plain Inertia" is probably the rea son a will is not made. When families spend a life time working and saving to build an estate, they really should take time to discuss what's going to haDDen lo their property at death. And, points out the author, these decisions are best made while people are young, healthy and not under emotional strain. The important thing is to get facts about your own sit uation and take steps to pre pare a will if one is needed, emphasizes Mrs. Miller. Avoids Legal Tangles A will is the only guaran tee a person has thai his prop erty will be distributed ex actly as he wishes upon his deatn. It greatly simDlifies distribution of an estate, has tens settlement for the heirs, It also discusses property, and often helps people avoid financial and legal tangles. Anyone who has reached his 21st birthday, is of sound mind and not under duress may make a will. The old ide that wills were something that wealthy old dowagers made upon the deuthbed aoes out the window In the light of today's financial planning. A lather who earns a mo derate income may have a compelling need to plan for transfer of his estate with costs, since he has less money to provide for overall needs of his family, advises the bul letin. The author lists 10 steps in making a will beginning with what you do before you see lawyer and carrying through to storage of the will and keeping It no to ditto. Willi Should Be Checked Only about 10 per cent of all the In nd in Switzerland is said to be suitable for agri cultural purposes. and personal, and ways of owning properties. Oregon- ians who have made wills in other states need to check to make sure their will is valid in the will Is not a resident of will may meet legal require ments in this state it is possi ble that the executor named in the will is not resident of Oregon and therefore could not serve. The bulletin also provides space for husband and wife to list information about valua ble family records. Many fam ilies fail to pull this type of in formation together causing in convenience and sometimes, hardship, to their survivors. Oregon residents may ob-1 tain a copy of the bulletin free on request at county exten sion offices or from the OSU Bulletin clerk.
