OREGON German Instructor Self-Taught While in Service in Germany By LEO SOROKA ' United .Press International ; St. Lou - (UPD - Six-foot Drayton Granville Miller owes part of his educational feat to the military, but most ly to his pretty 24-ycar-old wife, the former Hannelore Heil of Germany. The 28 year old "D.G.' (first two initials), as he is known, knew but three Ger man words "Gesundheit" and "auf Wicdersehon" when he first set foot on Ger man soil with the U.S. Army. That was before he met Han nelore. Now, D.G. can out-talk his wife in German. And this fall he took his first instructor's job at the University of Illi nois at Urbana. He's teaching first and second year German, courses he was able to skip because of his self-taught Ger man while in the army. Before D.G. enlisted for his military requirements, he had completed a bachelor of sci ence degree in business ad ministration. He had planned to pursue a business career. Wanis to Teach "Now, all I want to do la teach German and settle down on a university campus," He said, Even the couple's 19-months-old daughter, Paula, lias a basic German vocabu lary from listening to her American fcther and German mother speak at home. The army moved D.G. to Germany in September, 1853 Within six months he was speaking the language with out any schooling. When he met Hannelore he spoke German so well that her mother didn't know If he was German or American. That was one year after his arrival in Germany. The couple married in May, 1957, and it was Hannelore who suggested that her hus band change his career from business to German instruct or. "Even my family knew he had a gift for the language," Mrs. Miller said. Wife Helps 1 . D.G. said he couldn't have earned his master's at Wash ington university in May without Hannelore's help. D.G. wrote his term papers in English and German, and Hannelore typed the papers, sometimes working until 4:30 in the morning. "She was housewife, moth er and homework helper," D.G. sold. "I couldn't have made it without her." Before they were married, D.G. lew home to Decatur, III., on a furlough to tell his parents he hed decided on marrying a German girl and returning to school for a Ger man language career. The Millers returned to the states in January, 19S8, for D.G.'s mustering out at Ft. Dix, N.J. D.G. worked on a construction Job to save enough money and, with the help ot a G.I. school check, went back to Eastern Illinois university where he had earn ed a business degree before military service. Prof. Martin M. Mlcss at Eastern became D.G.'s bene factor. The alert professor recognized D.G.'s advanced knowledge ot the language. Mlcss found out that D.G. wanted a teaching career. He interviewed the student to see how much of the language he knew and then suggested a proficiency lest from the school's language department. Skips Grammar In a subsequent three-hour test, D.G. advanced to the third year German, thus skip ped German grammar. But that wasn't all, Mloss said D. G. was qualified to take third and fourth year German at the same time. D.G. has doubled up in school work ever since. At Washington university here where he earned his master's in German he won the covet ed Otto Heller fellowship, the first such award to a first year graduate student, He took a full load of courses each semester and earned the degree In nine months, to the amazement of colleagues. What started D.G. on his German language binge was the fact that he couldn't stand being on a foreign country and not knowing what people around him were saying. He read' signs and adver tisements on streets and tran sit vehicles. His first intro duction to reading German was in (Donald Duck and Mutt and Jeff) comic books in German. ' Next, he bought a text book on German grammar and started memorizing words. "I had the urge to learn more and more German," he said. "In restaurants I would talk to waiters. I hired taxis Just so that I could talk Ger man with the drivers." in six months, D.G. was speaking fairly fluently, "at least well enough," he said. that people didn't know that he was an American D.G. was hired for his first teaching job almost on the spot. He went to visit Prof. Frank G. Brante, head of the German department at Illi nois. "We started talking in Eng lish, of course," he said. "Sud denly, the professor started asking questions in German, and I answered his questions in German. "I felt that's what the pro fessor wanted to hear Ger man. We kept up a steady flow of questions and answers, and when it was all over, he told me then and there that I had the job." Grenfeirs Wife Sues for Divorce Portland - (UPD - Mrs. Kay Grcnfcll Wednesday filed suit for divorce from William A. Grenfcll Jr., former state sen ator, charging "cruel and in human" treatment. The suit asked for custody and support of the couple's three children. Grenfcll, an unsuccessful candidate for Mult n o m a h county commissioner last No vember, recently was acquit ted of a charge of making a false police report in connec tion witb a fatal traffic acci dent last October. He still faces a Circuit Court trial on a charge of failing to remain at the scene of an accident. All of the plumb ing in the kitchen -service bath area has been confined to a limited area. The clean lines of this con temporary exterior have been achieved through the use of wood shingles - which can be replaced with rock - metal windows, hoHid-nn-unard sid ing and stonework. Although a relatively narrow home, it seems much wider due to the roof gable design.
