A reception at Rogue gallery marked the opening of the exhibit of Southern Oregon Society of Artists. Among
those attending were James Ragland, president of Rogue Valley Art association, and Mrs. John Pletsch, president
of the society. The artists' group, organized in 1951 with less than a dozen members, now has more than 100
members, mostly active artists who paint for pleasure. However, such well-known professional artists as Hal
Bishop, Eugene Bennett, Robert Bosworth, Medford, and David Hagerbaumer, Ashland, belong to the group.

This painting of 1 farmhouse in the Applegate will be of particular interest to many who see the current show at
Roque gallery because it is the work of Robert Bosworth. Mr. Bosworth has produced mostly poetic impression
istic watercolors in recent years and the realistic wok of the farmhouse was painted as a present for his father,
Harlan P. Bosworth. The Bosworths live in the house, almost 100 years old; it was built by Carroll Matney and
he and hit wife, members of early-day Jackson founty families, reared 16 children in the home.

Two Groups Support
Art Needs of Valley
Members of the two organizations of this area devoted
to promoting art have joined forces this month on a
project. Members of Southern Oregon Society of Artists
have their first exhibit at Rogue gallery, which is oper
ated by Rogue Valley Art association. Members of the
society are all artists; admission to the group is based
on such work as paintings, sculpture or drawings. Con
trasted to this, members of the association may b
artists (many belong to both groups) but are mainly
persons who wish to see artistic effort encouraged
and who support the gallery because they believe it
to be an essential part of the cultural life of the area.
Because Rogue Valley Art association needs to increase the membership to five or six timet Hi present size, 1 group of woman hat
formed e telephone committee to work on lists of prospective members. Mrs. Thomat Rutter (center) heads the committee and the it
shown here with Mrs. Curtis Barnet (at left) and Mrs. A. N. Potter Jr. Believing that an art gallery it a necessity for the cultural
exittence of a community, the women and men of the memberthlp and telephone commllteet are tpreading the ttory of the
association'! program, the gallery and lit need for area-wide support.
