MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEOFORD. OREGON THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1963 B 7 William Grenfell Found Innocent On Technicality Portland - (I'PP - William A. Grenfell Jr., 37, was found innocent of a charge of mak ing a false police rcDort late j Wednesday when a judge or dered a directed verdict of acquittal. Grenfell, Democratic state senator who was defeated for Multnomah County commis sioner in the November elec tion, still faces trial later this month in Circuit Court on a charse of failing to leave his name at the scene of an acci dent. Municipal Judge Joseph J. Labadic accepted a motion by Burton H. Bennett, Grenfell's attorney, who asked for the directed verdict of acquittal. The motion hinged on use of the word "kidnaped" in the complaint against Grenfell. The complaint charged Grenfell made a false state ment to a police officer lo the effect that Grenfell ". . . had been kidnaped on the 9th day of October, 191)2 . . ." Bennett urged the city had failed lo prove that a kidnap ing as defined by the state code was reported to police. Judge Labadic agreed. Grenfell, who appeared at the trial in a wheelchair, told police last Oct. 9 he was :b- ducted and pushed from a moving car. The freak wave washed over a strip of dunes and raced across the sands to the Sanlo . Andre lagoon where the men were casting their nets from the shore for small fish. Bad weather had pre vented them from going out in ineir Doais. The fishermen were crouch ed on the beach singing and smoking when the huge wave lowered over them. The few who saw the on rushing wall of water had no time to run. The wave picked up the men and their nets, boats and equipment and swept them into the Jagoon. Coon Rapids, Minn. fUPD Officers Bill Morris and Wil- lard Johnson walked around Morris' squad car to investi gate a gasoline can at its rear and saw a hand protruding from beneath the auto.
