PARENTS WELCOME! Proper Preparation For Examinations Produces Results adIilt SUPERVISION AT ALL TIMES Bulldogs' Beat 300 North Peach By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist As examination time ap proaches many high school and college students will be spending long hours prepar ing Xor these tests. Although they are consistently advised not to wait until the last min ute, this practice continues. Perhaps, last minute study is not always the result of neglect. Much of this is valu able review. Since most exams require a great deal of specific knowledge, going over facts is quite important. Techniques Vary Effective study techniques vary with individuals. Some prefer long study sessions with relatively long rest peri ods. Others may desire short study sessions with short breaks for relaxation. Unfor tunately, short study sessions with long rest periods are not the answer. Parents should encourage the student to use the method best suited for his needs. Make sure that a quiet, well lighted area in the home is available. The pressure of unrelated responsibilities should be removed. This will permit the student to concen trate in a relaxed atmosphere. The actual studying should be well organized. Careful planning will save time and produce superior results. A study schedule should be writ ten down, thus making sure that sufficient time is avail, able for each subject. Since such estimates may be inac curate, extra lime should be included. Such a plan needs a few free times for entertain, mcnt. Naturally, this will de pend upon the number of days or weeks covered by the schedule. Materials Available There are many methods and materials available for reviewing. The first step is clarification of the aims and general areas covered by the course. Very often, a course outline has been distributed. A good set of notes taken during lectures is most valu able. A teacher will probably discuss those points which he considers most important. Of course, many of these will be included in an exam. A stu dent should go over the notes. 9 1 carefully checking items which have been emphasized. In many cases, students have been given printed ma terial covering specific top ics. These should be closely studied. They are obviously considered important by the teacher. Textbooks are major parts of most, courses. Naturally, they should have been read throughout the term. The book should be reviewed to make sure there is an under standing of the major points. A good method is to make notes in an outline form. Items which have been written in a student's own words are easily remembered. This tech nique can be used throughout the year. The notes will then be available for these impor tant study times. This avoids the need to re-read the entire book. Review Books Available Commercially prepared re view books are available for a variety of high school and college courses. These are not printed for tiie course as given by an in dividual teacher. They can be valuable as concise reviews of particular topics. The teach er can usually advise as to their value for his specific course. The materials assigned by the teacher and a student's notes are more directly relat ed to the course. Study for exams should be well organized. The time spent in planning will pay off in efficiency and results. Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn W. Baby Hummingbirds Are Tied to 'Mother's Apron' The small object you might sometime sec on a tree branch that closely resembles a knot may not be a knot at all - it could be the nest of the ruby throated hummingbird. The knot that is not a knot will be about the size of half an Eng lish walnut shell. It will look slartlingly knot like for the outside of the nest will be covered with lichens or some similar material that blends" in perfectly with the tree bark. Usually it will be, if it is a nest' and not a knot, about 10 or 15 feet above the ground. It will be about the most delicate "knot" you will ever see. Because of their diminutive size few people ever are privileged to see a humming bird's nest, but it's a worth while experience lo find one and learn what a masterpiece of construction this smallest of American birds can create. Hummingbirds are never found in flocks, or even in small groups; seldom docs an observer ever see over one or two in several days of search ing. And the nests are even harder to see than is the bird itself, until the observer's eyes are trained lo see what he is looking for. Then with diligence and patience the search is rewarded by the dis covery of one or more of these tiny, jewel-like nests. Strange Occurrence To those careful observers who have searched out 'he nest of the ruby throats, and revisited the nest during the time the eggs are there and the little hummers present, a strange occurrence in bird behavior has been noted. This behavior was believed to be an accident rather than a plan, until it had been observed so many times, by so many ob servers, that lis occurrence could not have been an acci dent. It is now recognized that the "supposed accident" is a habit trail, practiced by the parent birds, as a safety meas ure whereby the adults can lea re the nest without worry ing for fear the youngsters would fall out of the nest. While the babies are small, it is often necessary for both parent birds to be away, gatlv ering nectar from deep' throated flowers or picking up a few insects. For the babies, this parental absence would be the time of great danger, but there was a wise pro vision made for just such an eventuality. Nesting material comes in handy for other pur poses aside from structure or nest lining. All those serious students who have closely examined the nests of the ruby throated hummingbird are amazed at the perfection of the tiny nest, as well as the material that goes into it. Yards and yards of spider web; hundreds of fine, short and long plant rootlets (hair roots they are called), and down from vari ous flowers, selected for its softness and fineness of tex ture, are used. The outside of this gem of nests is covered with gray lichens. The eggs, while and usually I wo in number, are shaped like eggs but are no larger in bulk than an aspirin tablet. From these tiny eggs are hatched the very smallest of birds, similar in size to a baby honeybee. They real on a bed of softest materials; In the nest they are barely a half inch below the tipper rim of (he nest. So small and light are the babies a strong wind can dislodge them or even a sudden Jar of the tree limb can spill Ihem to Ihe ground. Bui mother and father hum mer have a plan, a clever plan. They tie the baby in; they loop a few strands of spider web about the youngster's leg so he cannot fall. With a silk en cord the baby humming birds arc secured to "mother's apron."
