Crants Pass Friday night to .'. nose the Black Tornado 62 to '.' 60 in the opening 1963 South ern Oregon conference basket . ball game (or both schools. Tom Sparlin's long two : i.andcr with 1:17 left to play was the victory bucket. The clubs . went into the ex tra knotted 58-all. Dick Doff ley tallied first for Mcdford on a pusher from the side. Then, a Jim Pippin driver made it 60-cach. Overtime contention fol lowed a see-saw fourth canto in which three Mcdfordites and one Caveman player were banished on personal foul charges. Score switched hands seven times in the period. Tom Sparlin with 15 points, Jim Pippin with 14 and Gary Keddick with 13 led the Cave man scoring and Marty Bauer and Larry Lindquist con tributed crucial points. Bauer and Pippin were the bulwarks on the boards. Actual scoring margin for the Cavemen was at the free loss line where they picked up 20 points on 34 shots to 16 of 32 by Tornado cagers. Mcdford had field goal edge 22 to 21. Early fouls and resulting Grants Pass gift shots hurt the visiting Black Tornado al though free heaves in the third panel helped the Mod lords to a seven-point lead. Then loss of regulars Jack Forde, Gibb Mitchell and Dan Miles in that order on five fouls each in the final frame was a hard blow to the Tor nadoes. Their replacements. Darryl Stockton, Dcffley and Jack Lowery, just the same put forth great effort against the Climate city boys, along with Mike Barnes and Mike Neathamer, the starters who were left. Forde collected 13 points for Medford before bowing out in the first minute of the closing c h u k k e r. Mitchell, Neathamer, Barnes, Dcffley and Miles each had nine points. Mitchell retired with six minutes left in the period and Miles 42 seconds to go in regular lime. GP's Reddick who got all 13 of his points in the first half, fouled out with 5'4 minutes to go in the last quarter. Last Chance Mcdford had its last chance to score in the tussle when it got the ball with 11 sec onds remaining in the over time. Darryl Stockton missed on a long try and there was a big scramble under the hoop as time ran out. A Caveman smashed into Neathamer but refs Don Sutphin and Gary Dawes apparently failed to sec it. Otherwise, Medford could have had a final free line chance. The Tornado busted a stall by GP in the final seconds and seemed headed for the KF Pelicans Edge Ashlanders 52-51 MH Sophs Bounce GP Mcdford high fell behind twice in the last half but fought back to beat Grants Pass 46 to 30 Friday In sopho more basketball at Grants Pass. Judo Academy Classes Open Instructor Larry Nolle has reported that classes are open for children on Tuesdays at Medford Judo academy and that adult classes arc being held on Tuesday and Thurs day evenings. Ashland - Klamath Union high Pelicans opened defense of the Southern Oregon con ference basketball crown Fri day night by squeaking by Ashland's' improved Grizzlies 52 to 51. Hal Holman dropped in two free heaves with 40 seconds left for tying and winning points. It was at the gift toss line where Klamath won the bat tle. The Pelicans, stepping to the strip on 28 Grizzly fouls, put in 22 of 38 attemplsi Ash land, which tossed in 17 of 28 gift efforts, had a 17 to 15 field goal margin.- Ashland went into the fi nal canto leading 41 to 37. Klamath tied up the mix at 45-all and went on top 47 to 45. The Bruins caught up and took a 40 to 47 lead. KF dead locked play once more at 40- cach then took the lead 50 to 40. A Roger Ramsey free shot with 1:10 to play broke a 52-all knot. Rich Ireland put in a field shot with 48 seconds to piny. , Modrord led with 4:42 to go. With 1:35 Jerry McCor mack scored from the field for 52 to 51 Grants Pass lead. Bill Enyart of Mcdford dead locked the mix at the foul stripe. McCormack scored 25 mark ers for the Cavemen and Steve Newman 11. Enyart and Larry Stockman were high for Mcdford with six apiece. horn put Ashland back in front 51 to 50. The Grizzlies got off a cou ple of field shots after llol man's score. After Mike Cot ton missed a layup with 10 seconds to go, Klamath clear ed the rebound and held on. Ashland hopes were hit In the final canto when three men fouled out. Jim Lamb went just after play got un derway, Dale Topper with five minutes to play and Tod Hess with four minutes left in the game. Three other Grizzlies were assessed four infractions each. Holman had 17 points and Fred Kelley 15 for Klamath and . Hess and Dale Tcpper 11 for the Grizzlies. Klamath had a slight 27 to 24 margin in rebounds. Ashland was on top 15 to 7 at the quarter and Klamath 27 to 25 at the half. KF Jayvces won 43 to 30 over their Ashland counter parts with Larry Binncy and Bud Luumus getting 10 points apiece for Klamath and Billy Jury nine for Ashland. The Pels also look the sophomore clash 42 to 28. Jim Conklin scored 18 points for Ashland and Kim Coon 15 for KF. nox: K. Bauer had opportunity to win the fracas when he was awarded the free toss on Miles' last foul. He missed and Lowery grabbed the re bound. Mcdford played for one good shot In remaining regular time. A long try by Neathamer bounced off the rim with two seconds left. GP headed 18 to 12 at the quarter after a starting Med ford lead. The Tornado pull ed up but could not get on lop until Neathamer hit on a fast break for 31 to 30 with 1:45 to go in the half. That was the halftime score. The Tornado worked to a 48 to 41 gap in the third quarter but led just 48 to 45 when the stanza ended. Lead Switches Grants Pass regained the; lead at 49 to 48 on free heaves by Pippin. A Miles pusher from the side and his gift throw made it 51 to 49 for Medford. Pippin put in another free toss and Lind quist a rebound goal for GP 52 to 51. Barnes' pusher with four minutes to play restored the lead for Medford. But, Pippin cached a drive for 54 to 53 GP. A Miles juniper was countered by a Bauer under the hoop recovery goal. GP headed 56 to 55. Lowery made one of three tries from the foul stripe to tic up the conflict. Sparlin and Miles traded long jump push shots for the 58-all count. Miles, who acquired his fourth personal in the early second canto and sat until the fourth quarter, was a bundle of fiery energy when he re turned to the floor. Forde was assessed his fourth foul mid way in the third quarter a minute after the fourth charg ed to Mitchell. Mcdford statistics showed it with 22 goals in 55 shots for an even .4110 average and 40 rebounds. Grants Pass fig ures were 21 of 66 for .318 from the field and 46 re trieves. He had been a hos pital patient since Dec. 9. A hospital spokesman said death apparently was caused by a heart attack. Hornsby suf fered a stroke last month while recuperating from surg ery for cataracts. (UPI) Friends, Eastwood, St. Luke's Victors Friends, Eastwood Baptist and St. Luke's Methodist won opening games Thursday in the adult church basketball league. The Friends beat Sacred Heart Catholic 53 to 48. B. Bromley had 23 points for Sacred Heart and E. Cooper 14 for the winners. Noahro got 12 points as Eastwood took Ascension Lutheran 38 to 20. Medford grapplers took three decisions and drew in another bout. GP won eight individual contests and took another by forfeit. Tom Owens, Medford 138 pounder, wrestled his best of the season to gain a 4-all draw with Art Amberg. Mike Orr, of the Tornado, was sharp in taking his 115-pound bout 5-0 from Jerry Condray. Tom Metz, 168, recorded a revers al in the closing moments and held Terry Isabell down for a 6-5 nod for Medford. Jeff Hardrath, unlimited, shaded his GP rival 1-0 as Terry Shores played keep away. In the 98-pound class Dave Vancil, Grants Pass, was de clared winner by forfeit be cause Rick Orr was over weight. The two wrestled any way with Vancil scoring a de cision. Orr had worked out earlier in the day in effort to make the weight. Don Bailey, 106, and Pat Edgcrton. 157, both of Grants Pass, scored the only varsity pins. Public Hearing January 11 on Fishing Rules Portland-Oregon sportsmen arc advised that the sport fish ing regulations for the 1963 season will be open for dis cussion at a public hearing Friday, Jan. 11, at the game commission's Portland head quarters, 1U34 Southwest Al der st. The meeting is sched uled to convene at 10 a.m. During the hearing winter and summer regulations for all game fish will be considered. Following a Iwo-wcek interval and publication of tentative rules, a second hearing will be called on Friday, Jan. 25. Al the second healing the game commission will adopt the final angling regulations for the 1863 season. All persons arc invited to attend the regulations hearing.
