NEALON Mail Tribune Table Rock Correspondent In (he 30 years ago column of last Friday's Mail Trib une, appeared this item: "Dec. 28, 1032, Emmett Nealon of Table Rock named county commissioner to fill vacancy caused by resignation." Tliis brings lo mind thai on that same day we pro cured a license lo wed, at the clerk's office. On our way out we met Ralph Joinings who knew what we had done in the clerk's office, and remarked: "You must be a bear for punishment. Not satisfied with getting yourself into this county mess, you arc getting married." Ralph had run for Sheriff as a write-in candidate, and had lost out by fraudulent counting of votes. The pot of county affairs was simmering and John Barncburg had resigned as commissioner owing to his health. We no sooner got into office until the pot was boiling over, and we discovered that this was no place for a sick man. ' Our appointment threw a monkey wrench into the plan of the Good Government congress lo take over the county. They claimed the appointment was illegal, and charged that then Commissioner Burscll and Judge Lampkin had mutilated the recort1 . They had them brought in before the court, but the case was dismissed. While there, Victor Burscll told us he was sorry he had got met into su much trouble. He said he had heard us argue in Grange meetings and figured that we could hold our own and would not be alraid to defend uur side of the argument. During this time the court house was over run with "Congressmen," and several people carried guns. The question with the G.G.C. was how to get Nealon off the court. One day as Dick Straus of Sams Valley was going through the court house, he heard a man say to Earl Fehl, "If you want him bumped off, say the word, and we will do the Job." Fchl's face turned white, and Straus said to the would-be assassin, "You try something like that and you ' will be hanging to a tree so quick you won't know ' how it happened." A good friend was Dick, willing to : back us up, even if he had lo hang someone. I Another time we came lo the courthouse and found Fat Walker sitting on the commissioners' desk with his feet hanging over aruging with some dozen "Congress men" who dispersed when we came In to lake our seat. , We asked him what was going on, and he said he had got a hunch that they were going lo take us for a ride. Some way they found that we wouid be coming alone that morning. When wc asked him what he would have done if they had tried to rush us, he showed us a black Jack he had under his coat, Maying that had they attacked, he would have started swinging both ways, knocking them down as Ihey came in range. Another friend indeed. For holding down Ihis Job we were paid $5.00 a day (Hie duys wc worked) in warrants which tile banks discounted ten per eonl. We furnished our own jalopy, gas, etc. Wc hear that the court now sets their own salaries. While we believe a workman is worthy of his hire, we believe the one who hires should set the salary. The tax payers In this case do the hiring. Since members of the court set their salaries, we property owners should be allowed to appraise our properly for tax purposes. The Table Rock Ladies Club will meet Wednesday Jan. 9 at the home of Mrs. Robert Dunn, with Mrs. John Nealon assisting. Mrs. L. R. Nealon home, also Mr. and Mrs. Millon Houston, of Upper Applcgate, and Mrs. Josephine Cornutt, Old ' Stage rd. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Robinson, and family, Napa, Calif., and Elgin Robinson, Oakland. Calif, were holiday guests of the E. E. Robinsons. Buddy Rubinson was a recent business visitor in the bay area, Calif. Thought for the day- A friend in need, is a friend Indeed! Central Point Fire Department Installs Officers Central Point Members of the Central Point firemen held their regular Wednesday evening drill Jan. 2 at the fire station, and installed new of ficers. The new officers elected and installed were Calvin Bowers, president; Glen Ger rard, vice president; Earl Fox, secretary; Jack Mclvin, assist ant secretary, and Francis Marshall, treasurer. City Always Protected Twenty men compose the fire department, under the direction of Don Turner, fire chief, and Don Milligan, as sistant lire chief. The entire group is a vol u n t e e r unit. Nevertheless, there is always someone on call at all times: The city is always protected. At the present time there are four units in operation, three fire trucks and one res cue unit. All units are radio equipped, and messages are automatically relayed from one unit to the other. Any emergency can be taken care of. Nw Truck Possible The spirit of the firemen is high al this time, as there is the pussible chance of the addition of a new fire truck soon to be added lo the de partment. Another bright spot is that with tile new water reservoir, water mains, and the 750 gal lon pumper truck providing added protection, there is the possibility the tire insurance rales in Ihc district may be reduced, according lo Don Falier, outgoing president. Klamath River Chamber Seeks Formation of Advisory Group Happy Camp -Creation of a Klamath River Adv' ry com mittee to coordinate uses of the river has been recom mended by the recently or ganized Central Klamath Riv r Chamber of Commerce. . Al a meeting this week the chamber passed -a resolution urging Ihc late legislature to create such a committee to safeguard the recreational fa cilities of the river. : II was voted to have 500 copies of the resolution print ed up and distributed as wide ly as possible. . Applegate Land Exchanges Listed Applegate Valley - A num ber of property transactions have taken place here, includ ing sale of 20 acres south of Ruch to Charles Shurtleff of Fairbanks, Alaska, and the 40 acre ranch of Clarence Rol off at Squaw Creek, which was sold to James O'Quinn of Garden Grove, Calif. Shurtleff, owner of Polar Electronics at Fairbanks for a number of years, purchased his property from Carol Hayes of Medford, and expects to re tire here. Mr. and Mrs. Shurt leff plan to build a new home, and to start construction of a garage soon. Their acreage is located on Big Applegate high way a half mile south of Hamilton rd. junction. Near Da mSite The Squaw Creek property, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roloff for six years, is the second ranch in the area to sell in the face of an approaching federal dam in the Applcgate river a short distance below. Mr. and Mrs. O'Quinn and family will take possession of their new home in mid-January. Mr. and Mrs. Roloft in turn have purchased a home in lower Applegate from Hubert Slandley, and will reside there. The Slandlcys have purchased properly from Martin McDonough at Ruch and will make their home there. Yreka Christmas Lighting Contest Winners Announced Yreka - A secret committee composed of members of Ihe Bela Sigma Phi sorority, ap pointed by their president, toured the town of Yreka Christmas week looking over all the beautifully decorated homes and places of business. They were responsible for making the decisions as to who won in the contest of the best decorated home or place of business. First prize of $50 was uiven lo Ihe Tom Colburn residence. second prize of S30 was awarded to the Alden niekin. son home, third prize of $15 lo the Ray Quiglcys, and fourth prize of $5 to the Harry Millette residence. 'Swamp Specials' Go To Alaska Gold Hill - The first new product released under the new equipment firm formed by the consolidation of Jed deloh Brothers Sweed Mills of Gold Hill and Holt Equip ment company of Independ ence is the "Swamp Special" crawler tractor. The new machine is the answer to problems of trans porting personnel and equip ment over the soft swampy muskeg of Alaska. Five of the new "Swamp Specials" will be put in op eration for the first time in February for transporting personnel and equipment on Alaska oil exploration proj ects. Extra long trucks with wide 22-inch pads give a distribu tion of the 6500-pound tractor weight over a large surface with 2' b pound pressure per square inch - just one-half the pressure under the aver age weight man's feet. The "Swamp Special" is a light duty crawler powered by a 134 inch Ford motor. A hydraulic operated straight dozer blade is standard equip ment giving Uie "Swamp Special" added utility on soft terrain, snow, or ice. 'Candy Cane Capers1 Given In Montague By CHARLOTTE DAVIS Mail Tribune Correspondent Montague-"Candy Cane Ca pers" was the theme of the program presented at the Lit tle Shasta School the evening of Dec. 21. Mrs. Paul Weddle, who teaches seven grades in one room, presented her pupils in a well rounded holiday pro gram, from the welcome giv en by first graders, Christine Brummelt and Ronnie Mort to the final number, a mock radio show announced by Dan Williams, a seventh grader, all the children performed well lo the large crowd of parents and friends attending. The radio show was a unique way of incorporating the telling of various Christ mas customs and the singing of carols from many lands. At various limes the audience joined in the singing. Various plays, songs and recitations were performed by the aforementioned and Brice Martin, Reg Smith, Scott Alf. Not only was the fine per formance done entirely by the children, but also the cos tumes, the decorations which included 'Candy Cane' stag ing, a large lighted tree. 'stained glass' windows and other art work including hand made invitations attested to the fine leadership of the teacher. At the end of the program Santa Claus appeared with treats for all the school chil dren as well as the preschool children in the audience. Laundromat Opens In Eagle Point Eagle Point-A coin operat ed laundry opened its doors to the public in Eagle Point Saturday morning. There has been a gre-t de mand for this type of busi ness in Eagle Point and fol lowing rumors for two years that various people were considering the possi bility of establishing o.ie here, Charlie (Chuck) Hayes and James Lane of But'e Falls Star Route, Eagle Point took out a three year lease on the building located on Main street next door to the new Eagle Point Barber. Al the present time they have eight washing machines and three clothes dryers in stalled with plans for addi tional machines and dryers to be installed shortly. Hayes reported that he was well sat isfied with the usage of the machines the first two days and by spring hopes to have dry cleaning machines in stalled. Coffee, doughnuts, am soft drinks for the childrc will be given to all guests at an open house Jan. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hayes said he and Lane plan to be in attendance for the next couple of d-'ys and from then on an attendant will be at the do-it-yourself cleaners in the evenings and on Saturday and Sundays only. Temporary hours fo the store are set for 7:30 a.m. to 0 p.m., with the hours to be permanently set to the convenience of customers.
