Each article Is a summary of a family disagreement presented to the Council. The Council deals with problems, major and minor, encountered hy guidance counselors and social workers. Kdlted by Airs. Alma Denny. (Copyright by General Features Corp.) Mrs M.P. I feel I was right to' send Christmas cards as usual. Nally P. A woman in mourning isn't expected to tend greetings. Mr. M.P In September my husband passed away. Nevertheless this Christmas I went through our usual list and sent out Christmas greet ings on a very plain dignified card. It has come back to me that a few people considered this bad taste. During the 26 years of our marriage, our mailing list has firown to over two hundred. I'm sure most of those people expected some word from me. Of course, without Char les around to tell me, I in cluded a few fellows from the plant where he worked who were discharged during the year and didn't know what had happened. Contrary to what my sister-in-law says, I feel I did the right thing. Nelly P My poor brother breathed his last Just a bare three months before the holi days. It seems to me there are certain proprieties my Fister-in-law should adhere to during this period which is so sad for the family. How can she sit down and ask everybody to be happy? A recently bereaved widow isn't expected to be spreading joy around. But Marian Just went ahead and mailed her pack of en velopes as usual. One family no much as told her in plain English that it was a heart less thing to do, especially since they had lost their moth er in August. She should have mor.e re spect for the mood of a mourn er is in, Christmas or not. Tht Council: We must as sume that Mrs. P. pruned her regular mailing-list carefully no as to include only those Fhe felt would be glad, and relieved, to hear from her. If Fhe was selective as to the recipients of her pcrk-up post ings, she used good sense and showed fine sensitivity to greet their friends who knew her husband. Most of them must have been heartened to ree how an old friendship could be sustained by the re maining partner. Ordinarily, the etiquette books suggest a three-month "restricted" period for the newly-desolate to be alone with their memories, thoughts and plans. But with Christmas at hand, Mrs. P.'s memories were suffused with scenes of the preparations she and her husband made jointly each year. What better way to hon or him. then, than to do what he'd be doing if present? Nelly should be able to see that her sister-in-law was ex tending good wisncs in dc- half of herself and her late husband, even though this year the signatures had to be hers alone. Mourning ,s a personal matter. Outward show has little relationship to inward feeling. And making others feel blue is a particularly sel fish way of emphasizing one's grief. Nelly's criticism of Mrs. P. for offering a cup o' cheer to another bereaved family reveals that Nelly is guided more by the book than by the heart. Certainly Mrs. P.'s sedate card wasn't urging these friends to be "jolly." It merely reminded them 'tis the season to lift one's eyes. Nowadays one may con tinue warm contacts with friends during the mourning period. Mrs. P. was wise not to listen to everyone's 2 cents, but to put her own 4 cents where she wished.
