This word of approval, ac cording to the National Geo graphic society, i s probably the world's most widely used and understood. The society has issued in English, natually a report paying tribute to English. "No other launguage has served a greater variety of needs, or come closer to the mythical goal of a world tongue," the society said. "As the speech of civil aviation, it has reached the far corners of the earth. Half the world's newspapers and scientific journals are published in English, making it second only to Chinese. English Official "Hindustani conies next; yet India, its homeland, re tains English as an official language," the society said. Why is English so popular? "The international appeal of English lies in its flexi bility," the society said. "While precise enough to be a tool of science, it possesses the delicate shades of mean ing required for literary pur poses. Foreign speakers ap preciate the abunddance of short, punchy words." Of the more than one mil lion words in the English vo cabulary, about 75 per cent arc derived from foreign sources, according to the so ciety. It said the immediate an cestor of English was a Teu tonic dialect spoken by tribes men on the North Sea cooast between Holland and Den mark. "In the Fifth century, many of these people the Angels. Jutes, and Saxons settled England," it said. "The de scendants of tribesmen who stayed on the continent still use a version of the original language, Low German or Frisian. Galic and Welsh ' Celtic Britons, who were driven by Germanic invaders, left the ingredients of modern Galeic and Welsh. But their influence on the Anglo-Saxons was insignificant."
