Supporting Tax Cut

Ullman (D-Ore.) said Wednes-.
day he would support a tax
cut if the present economic
trend continues.
But Ullman, a member of
the House Ways and Means
committee, said he would
reach no final decision until
further hearings are held by
the committee.
The Oregon Democrat said
he thought that testimony
presented this year before tho .
committee had revealed "a
preponderance of evidence"
that a tax cut would spur eco
nomic growth.
A tax cut would seem to
be justified on the basis of
overwhelming evidence that
the present lax structure iJ
acting as a drag on the econ-"
omy," he said.
However, Ullman said,
whether such a tax cut ulti
mately should be made would
depend on the state of the
economy at the time a tax'
revision program comes up
for a vote.
A speeding up of the econ
omy and possible resumption
of an inflationary trend might
make a tax cut undesirable,
he said.
