Christmas Bureau Completes Its Work With Basket Distribution Valley Man Is On Probation for Part in Fire Case Claude Walter Chase. 41. of route 2. box 6fiSB, Central Point, Friday afternoon in Jackson county circuit court was- placed on probation and imposition of sentence was suspended for five years on a charge of setting fire to forest land. In suspending the sentence, Circuit Judge Edward C. Kelly said the pre-sentence in vestigation report pointed fa vorably to probation. He not-, ed Chase had a good employ-! ment record, good service roc-1 ord and prior to the crime to which he had pleaded guilty, he had been considered a good citizen. Judge Kelly said ordinarily he would not grant probation i in such a case, but felt "an institutional sentence" would be a severe hardship on the wife and seven children. The circuit judge noted that both Jackson and Josephine coun ties' district attorneys favored probation. Drove Truck Chase's attorney. Robert Royer, Medford, pointed out Friday that Chase had not set any of the fires, but had driven the truck and had not stopped the other two men from setting the fires. Chase was arrested as an accomplice to setting a series of approximately 12 roadside fires that occurred in Jose phine and Jackson counties last July 16. Scheduled for sentencing Dec. 26 on a similar charge is Henry Stumbo, 34, of Wolf Creek. The two men pleaded guilty to the charges in circuit court Sept. 11. They, with Leo V. Thompson, 39, Salem, were indicled by a grand jury in August. Thompson Ls current ly serving a 20-month sen tence in Oregon state penitentiary. Jl. J. . ... The Jackson County Inter community Council's Christ mas bureau has completed its work for another year and baskets and toys were distrib uted to the needy Friday afternoon. Each year, the bureau is operated through the Red Cross office. Applications for assislance to the needy dur ing the holiday season are ac cepted, and the services of organizations throughout the area are coordinated. Names are provided to or ganziations wishing to present, baskets and families not pro vided for by outside organiza tions are taken care of by the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Foodstuffs Collected Foodstuffs have been rol- vatinn Army's bell ringers kettles, contributions of food stuffs have been made by stores In the area, more than 500 dolls were repaired and dressed by the 50-Plus club and Medford firemen have been working for weeks paint ing and repairing toys. Friday the Elks club an nex was the scene of activity as the baskets were packed by members of the Elks lodge. Some baskets were picked up; the rest were delivered by welfare case workers and members of the Elks lodge. In a downbtown garage, toys which had been readied by firemen were sorted in groups for boys and girls and by age by Red Cross volun teers under the direction of Mrs. O. A. Almost 400 applications were handled through the Christmas bureau this year, with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army providing baskets for 3(10 families and toys for hundreds of children. Burich is chief of surgery at the hospital; Dr. Ralph Hihbs, chief of medi cine; Dr. H. L. Bochnke, chief of pediatrics: Dr. R. H. Saul, chief of radiology; Dr. T. E. Upton, chief of aneslhesia; and Dr. Otto Emig, chief of gynecology. Mrs. Helen Lamherg was introduced as speaker by the retiring president, Dr. E. V. Meyerding. She explained the new electronic system of data processing for medical rec ords. The system was put Into effect Dec. 1.
