Fr3 EO) rr A X LAST MINUTE GIFTS THAT HAVE THAT EARLY-SELECTED LOOK! BUYS FIRST NATION - Newton H. Minow, chairman of the Fed e r a 1 Communications Com mission, told a meeting of the Town Hall in Los Angeles that history will show that the Russians were first to put a man in space but history will show that America was the first nation to orbit an idea. (UPI) 1962 Field Crops Valued al Record $20,107,281, Washington - WPU - Ameri can farmers produced field crops in 1962 valued at a record $20, 107,281,000, about $365 million more than the value of the 1961 crop. The field crop production this year equaled the record output of 1960 and was 1 per cent higher than the 1961 crop. The Agriculture depart ment's year end report Tues day showed that the record tying crop was planted or grown on 302 million acres. This was the smallest planted acreage since records began in 1929. The harvested acre age for the 1962 crop was 288 million acres, the smallest number since the comparable series started in 1909. Record high yields per acre for many crops lifted the production volume to the lev el of 1960 despite the small harvested acreage. The vol ume was 108 per cent of the 1957-59 base. Favorable growing condi tions in the central part of the country - the nation's breadbasket - helped corn and other feed grains record yields per acre. Com pared with last year, food grains, vegetables and fruits and nuts showed declines, while all other groups includ ed in the production index in creased. Compared with 1960, production of feed grains and food grains was lower, but increases in all other groups of crops offset these de creases. The composite index cover ing yields per acre of 28 ma jor crops rose to 113 per cent of the base period, up 4 per cent from the previous high of 109 in 1961. New yields were establish ed for corn and the other Ihree feed Brains, as well as the average tonnage per acre of all hay and the two silage crops, corn and sorghum. Spring wheat set new yield records while winter wheat yield per acre was the fourth highest on record. Soybean yields were second to last year, but peanuts, flaxseed, and tobacco were at all time highs. Production of the four feed grains in 1962 totaled 143.1 million tons. This was nearly 2 per cent above the 140.6 mil lion tons produced in 1961. The new vicld records for corn, oats and barley more than offset acreage reduc tions. Grain sorghums and acreage and yield both were shove a year earlier. . Production of food grains rinwn fi nrr cent from 1961, following a 9 per cent drop from 1960. Oilseed pro duction rose 1 per cent, to bacco went up 10 per cent, mid sugar beets were up 3 per cent. Potato production fell 8 per cent while sweet pota toes jumped 20 per cent. The department estimated fho value of the corn crop at S3.923.228.000. up sli g h 1 1 from the revised value of S3 90H.2 17.000 for the 1961 crop.
