They said the three men were caught Sunday night as they set off a blast that blew a nine-foot square hole in the wall of the American sector border 300 yards from the U.S. Army's Checkpoint Char lie. It was the biggest hole ever blown In the wall. We are doing it for Ger many, the men said. Explosives Found In their home nnlipp fniinrf 20 pounds of explosives, 31 detonator capsules and 8 rolls of fuse. No refugees escaped throueh the hole. Workmen guarded by Eastern police la bored through the night to re pair the wall. Western headauarters said the West Berliners, aged 21, 25 and 37, were caught by a West Berlin nnlirPTrnnn iitcf after they had lighted a fuse to set the blast. The policeman and the three men ran from the wall and minutes later the explosion went off. No one was Injured al though the explosion broke 60 West Berlin windows and hurled debris 75 yards. The West Berlin city gov ernment repeatedly has warn ed It will arrest persons who try to blow up the wall al though it stresses it has no sympathy with the wall. Education Budget Termed Inadequate Salem - (UPD - The Oregon College of Education student Legislative Information com mittee said today the proposed biennial budget for higher ed ucation is inadequate to "sup port quality education in Oregon." Clifford L. Cook, chairman. said the committee issued a three page report to the stu dents and faculty which claimed the higher education budget was short by $32.5 million. The committee said that suggested tuition increas es might endanger students financial position, and could deny admission for students of low income families. A report is being prepared which will be presented to each legislator in January, Cook said. Grants Pass Man Files Complaint The Rev. Robert A. Allen. Grants Pass, is seeking $1, 654.95 In damages from Cur tis Edward Yates, Hebo, Ore. as a result of an auto-pedes trian accident in Ashland dur ing July 13, 1962, which in jured his son Ronald Murl Allen, 7. Mr. Allen is seeking $654.95 for medical expenses and $1, 000 in general damages, ac cording to a complaint filed in circuit court. The complaint states that Ronald received severe and permanent injur ies when struck by a car driv en by Yates as the boy was crossing North Main St. near Coolidge t. in Ashland. The complaint charges that Yates failed to keep a careful lookout, to keep his car under control, and was driving at a speed excessive for the driv ing conditions. Servicemen COMPLETES TRAINING Marine Pvt. Earnest L, Packard, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Packard, 1012 Mt. Pitt ave., Medford, recently completely recruit training at the Marine Corps recruit de pot, Parris Island, S.C. IN CALIFORNIA Cave Junction James I. Burch, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Burch of Cave June lion, has enlisted in the U.S. Army. At present he is sta tioned at Fort Ord, Calif., undergoing his eight weeks of basic training. On completion of the basic training, he will enter either Infantry training or a specialist school. Burch, 18, is an adopted son of the Cave Junction couple, He Is a native of Germany and became a U.S. citizen in 1961. He attended Illinois Valley High school prior to hit enlistment.
