MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY. DECEMBER 17. 1962 The Missing Years Dick West, Hooked for Life, Extends Best Anniversary Wishes To Baghdad On the Air By ELEANOR WIESE SBA To Open Field Office in Medford By DICK WEST Washington -iUPD- 1 always have been kind of g nut about Baghdad. I have never been there, but that isn tnecessary. All you have to do is read the Arabian Nights and see a couple ol old Rudolph V a 1 e n t i no movies and you're hooked wt for life. Actu ally, I'm not certain that the Valentino movies had any connection with Baghdad. But they are linked in my mem ory along with magic carpets and Ali Baba. At any rate, Baghdad is relebrating its 1,000th anni- versa ry this month, and I thought you might like In join me in wishing it a happy millennium. In truth, Baghdad is much older than that. One thousand is just as good a round num ber to use for a celebration. Braverton was shaken up. Durante was taken to police headquarters where he was charged with having no dri ver's license, driving too close, and damage to city property. He posted a $25 bond and said he would not appear at a booked appearance in traffic court March 14. Durante put on an im promptu show for the police men 'during the proceedings and actually spent more time posing for photographers with his hands in cuffs and signing the bond. A.D.. when it i In capital Florida To Present Operation Alphabet Tallahassee. Fla. - HOT -Florida officials have an nounced plans for Operation Alphabet a project aimed at teaching a quarter of a mil lion adults in Florida who own television sets how to read and write. School Superintendent Thomas D. Bailey said Sat urday the 1960 census reveal ed that 261,4:13 Floridians over the age of 25 couldn't read or write. Operation Alphabet will present 100 half-hour televi sion programs teaching the basic skills and will be aired on the state's educational tel evision stations and three commercial channels. dad at 762 was chosen of tht Abbasid Caliphat during the rtign of the Abu Jaafar Al-Mansur. Using an electronic com puter, which I keep handy for such purposes, I subtracted 762 from 1962 and came up with 1200. When the embassy tossed a little party in Baghdad's hon or this week, I asked one of the officials what happened to the missing 200 years. He explained that they were being overlooked in order to make the event coincide with the 1,000th anniversary of the death of Abu Yusuf Al Kindi. Baghdad's most noted philosopher. Fair enough, I say. What's a couple of centuries among friends? For thai matter, the exact date of Al-Kindi's death is noi known. One educated esti mate is 873 A.D., or 1.089 years ago, which is close enough for me. But according to an en cyclopedia I consulted, to say that Baghdad U 1.000 years old is like saying that Sophie Tucker just turned 18. The city stands on a site which has been occupied since recorded time, give or take an eon or two, and the name itself has endured for at least 4,000 years. I was unable to ascertain how Baghdad got its name, but I like to think it originat ed when a thief of Baghdad stole a camel from the son of a Persian rug peddler. "He left me holding the bag, dad," the boy explained. Be that as it may, it can be said for sure that in the last 1,000 years Baghdad has been ruled by more than 270 governments. Any city that can survive that should last forever. KMED-TV. i cussion by A round table dis air corpsmen who Just as sure as Christmas comes every year, so do new Christmas Carol."
