By ETHEIYN EVANS Herb Cain writes In a San Francisco paper that in the southland they know that Thanksgiving is coming ONLY because all the Christ mas decorations are up and out. It is supposed to have something to do with a boost to the economy, but that early - in the blazing southland sun .. it seems most incongruous Also. Inez Robb is writing ar ticles calling for all those of us who don't like this early and long commercialization of Christmas to make a con certed eftort to stop it through adverse public opin ion. "Wanna" Join us? This reminds me that Ad ministrator Walter Higgins told me the Rogue Manor win aay "Merry Christmas" to the valley In the same manner as last year - lights In all of our many windows. This means all our public rooms, Including laundries, hobby rooms, recreation rooms, etc. and all private apartments. Service men will go through turning light on and off in the apartments of absent members. Mr. Higglnj also plans the ame huge, fully lighted tree on the roof of the porte rochere at the entrance, and the beautiful blue star on the roof of the penthouse. This atar is really large and ex pensively lighted, but is so very, very high that it could be overlooked. Do crane your necks and look for It - well wortb the effort. There will be two big trees In the lobby - one dazzling with lights and Christmas baubles, and the other with lights and Christmas cards from each member to the rest of us. We do hope the absen tees will remember to send In a card In plenty of time; but, In any event, there will be well over 300 cards. There Is always a group around this tree, reading the greetings, but it will probably take until the New Year for all to ex amine the cards and read each message. In addilibn to other decor ations, there will be another large tree in the auditorium and still another in the dining Toom. Our Christmas commit tee can be trusted to do a thorough and beautl fully decorated Job throughout the Manor. A committee chairman handed me a penciled sched ule of events planned so far. We will have our usual big. annual party for Administra tors, staff and members in the auditorium. After an enter taining program, Col Ralph Powell, Monte Scrcno, Calif., chairman of the council, will present the Christmas fund checks to our staff. This Is the only opportunity the members have to show ap preciation of the excellent, cheerful and kindly service given us by our staff. The Council collects the fun, al locates the money on the basis of seniority In service and distributes it. All of this will be followed by a reception, an abundance of Christmas refreshments and dancing. All during the holidays there will be cnlcrluinmciU -plays, skits and religious pageants put on by the mem bers, plus a number nt special Christmas movies. The Mcd ford High school choir, the Phoenix High school choral group, the Ashland High achool Carol singers and others will be on hand lo add to the Christmas spirit. Add to all of tills the dozens and dozens of private parlies throughout the Mnnor, and you will know dial the "Mil you will know that it will be a gay plare this Yulctide. I'm chatting about Christmas plans well beforehand this year, as the next 'Manor-Isms'' dale. Dec. 30th will be too late. Mrs. F. M. Miirdui-k. who formerly lived in Butler, Pa., but who is now my neighbor on "Manor Fifth Avenue," in vited more than 100 friends to drop in for a prc-llnliday tea during (lie hours 2-to-5 p.m. While this may seem a goodly crowd, he had willing and efficient help. ' Gingered Orange Tasty Confection Gingered orange peel is a delectable confection that can add to the goodies served at holiday time or make a quickly and easily-made gift with little expense. Cover the peel of three large oranges with cold water. Bring to boil and cook until tender, pouring off the water and adding fresh cold water several times. Drain peel and cut in thin strips with scissors. In a saucepan, mix one cup sugar and two teaspoons ground ginger. Add one-half cup water and cook until mix ture threads, (242 degrees on a candy thermometer.) Add peel end cook over low heat until syrup is absorbed. Roll each strip in mixture of two teaspoons ginger, com bined with one-half cup sugar until coated. Cool. Makes about one-half pound. t TURKEY TIP New York - (UPll - Thinking of stuffing your turkey the day before roasting?
