Two Christmas trees, deco rated by the Junior Red Cross, under the supervision of Mrs. Darlene Darby, Medford, will form a glittering part of the dining rooms' festive decora tions. Decorating Project Mrs. Frances Zundel, domi ciliary representative for the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries, Department of Oregon, also has a responsible hand in the domiciliary deco rations. The Oregon Federa tion of Garden clubs, with Mrs. Olive Floyd, Veterans Administration Volunteers j Services representative, and I Mrs. Edith Poe, alternate, have been busy for the past weeks on the huge decorating project. The finely printed menu, made up for mailing also, starts off with a shrimp salad cocktail. Oregon Tom Turkey follows with a cornbread stuf fing and de-luxe gravy. It in cludes Irish whipped potatoes, green bcans-amadinc, orange cranberry relish, radishes and olives, hot cloverleaf rolls, plum pudding with hard sauce or egg nog Ice cream and hard candies finish off the dinner. The salad featuring the day will be a Christmas wreath of pineapple rings basing red and green cherries. Fruit cakes which will be served Christmas and at other times are ready. They were baked before Thanksgiving, Mrs. Gooch said. About 850 pounds of Ore gon turkey will be required for the dinner. Jack Waugaman, a switch board operator, stepped In front of a huge panel dotted with dials, pushbuttons, flash ing lights and other assorted indicators. He fingered the in struments expertly and brought a turbine generator into synchronization. In so dong, Waugaman acti vated the world's first full scale atomic electric power plant designed exclusively for peaceful purposes. The place was Shipping port, Pa., a small Ohio River town about 25 air miles north west of Pittsburgh. The date, Dec. 18, 1957 - five years ago Tuesday. On Test Basic The Shippingport Atomic Power Station, a joint ven ture of the U. S. Atomic Ener gy Commission and Duquesne Light Company of Pittsburgh, initially went into operation on a test basis. Now, some 1,153,000,000 kilowatt hours later, a house wife in Beaver, Pa., flips a switch and her electric mixer swirls into action. A class bell rings and chil dren hurry down a corridor of a junior high school in Monaca. The street lights come on In Midland. There is a good chance I he electricity that powered the mixer, rang the class bell and gave Midland light came from the atomic reactor at Ship pingport. Power Mixes Together I he atomic-produced power and that from conventional sources mix together to serve the western! Pennsylvania area. We do not know exactly which communities in our system receive power from Shippingport," a Duquesne Light spokesman said. "But it's a good bet that towns and cities like Monaca, Beaver and others in the immediate vicinity of the atomic plant get their share." At present, the Shipping port plant is temporarily out of service. It is being refueled for the third time since that eventful day in 1957. Electri cal output Is halted during re fueling. But progress Is being made even in this highly-technical maneuver. When the fuel or the 58- I Ion nuclear core was changed I the first time the process took five months, between Novem 1 her, 1959, and April, 1960. The second refueling last year was completed in two months. Six Weeks Tim This time, the process was begun on Nov. 23 and the plant will be operative again In January - or about six weeks time. The Shippingport station was designed to supply enough power to provide for the residential needs for a citv of 250,000 residents. The 1,153,000,000 kilowatt hours produced at Shipping port since it opened represent enough power to supply 100,- 000 average homes for about four years. The town of Shippingport has 3R3 residents. The popula tion hasn't changed since the atomic power station was built. But feelings have chan ged. Business Picks Up Mrs. Carl Calhoon operatea a restaurant in town. When construction of the plant be gan back in 1953, her busi ness picked up. She also got to know the workers because they usually had lunch at her place. "Quite a few people had fears at the lime," she recall ed. "Occasionally, It would be mentioned that the plant might blow up, but I never felt that way. The workers assured me there was no danger." Mrs. Louis Dydck, mother of three children ranging in age from 4 to 10 years, said Initially she was frightened by thoughts of an atomic pow er plant. "But the fear Is all over now." "At first I was afraid ... 1 wanted to move out," she said. "Now, I don't even give It (the plant) much thought." Wilburn's Case Rested In Columbia Fraud St. Helens -iWt- Counsel for Republican sheriff candi date Roy Wilburn rested its case In Columbia county vote fraud trial here Thursday amid testimony Indicating de struction nf some ballots and altering of others. Wilburn has filed a civil suit asking that he be declared winner of the Nov. 6 election for county sheriff. Wilburn led Democratic incumbent Spencer Youncc by 100 votes after the initial count, but Youncc won by 41 in a re count. Wilburn has charged the ballots were tampered with afler Ihe Initial co'iM.
