MEDFOHP, OHESOW Old House Becomes Center Piece for Successful Show Plans for Health Service Building At SOC Approved Ashland - "Not only were our preliminary plans for a new health service building at Southern Oregon college approved,' but we placed be fore the board two other Items of business of considerable import to the growth of the college which were also passi ed upon." This t!ement was made by President Elmo N. Steven son upon his return to the SOC campus from a meeting of the Oregon state system of higher education board In Portland last week. "Our increased enrollment, particularly that recorded for the fall term of 1062, has made it necessary to request a modification of the capital construction schedule for the college which was approved by the Board last July," Dr. Stevenson stated. For the biennium years of 1963-65, he explained the total of $940,000 projected had been raised to $1,590,000. This total is to be expended for Cascade Hall, Unit E, a dorm! tory for 96 students; athletic facilities, including a portion of the cost of a swimming pool; a dining hall for the present Cascade complex; and another dormitory, Unit F, for 100 students, including a din ing hall, which will also be a part of the Cascade housing units. Three Dormitories From 1965 through 1967, three more dormitories will be added to the Cascade area, and an athletic stadium with adequate bleachers will be constructed. Costs for these projects have been revised upward from $590,000 to $1,030,000, Dr. Stevenson said. During the biennium years 1967 to 1960, the cost for three more dormitory addi tions, two with dining facili ties, and the expansion of the Britt Student Center, have been increased to $1,280,000 from the original estimate of $840,000. Stevenson pointed out that all of the proposed projects could be financed from re stricted fund balances and bond borrowings, Bnd that the order of construction could be adjusted according to need from one biennium period to the other. It was also reported that Robert J. Kenney, Medford architect, was authorized by the board to continue the prep aration of preliminary plans for Unit E of the Cascade complex for which he had originally served as architect. Not many people show interest in a broken-down ICO-year-old house and he maneuvered into position for a flying tackle if the prospect tried to leave. He need not bothered. For as he yielded to hon esty and rattled off the im perfections of the dilapidated dwelling his prospect became more and more delighted. "The plumbing is gone," mumbled the salesman. "Good," said the prospect. "The doors and frames are out of true." "Capital," exulted the pros pect. Well, thought the salesman clinching the deal, it lakes all kinds of people to make a world. Make Television Show And it takes all kinds of ideas to make a television show. The real estate opera tor did not know it then but the old house was destined to become the center piece of one of the most successful television programs ever broadcast in Britain. Its name is "Buckncll's House." And no one in this land, where television origi nated, can remember any pro gram that ever before drew 60,000 letters from viewers in two weeks. Especially a program whose stars are a somewhat pot bellied old house and a some what midriffy handyman whose only pretension to gla mor is that he makes the odd jobs every husband should be ble to do look easy too darned easy as a number of Irate males have Informed him. Produces Inspiration 'Bucknell s House was the inspiration of a British Broad casting Corporation producer, Stanley Hyland, who thought he would take advantage of the do-it-yourself craze by finding an "old and nauseating dump" and asking his friend Barry Buck nell to put it back into shape with the cameras watching. Repairs were partly Buck ncll's business. He heads a family building firm. Buckncll's announcement in the first program that he would restore the house as a "desirable residence" sent shock waves rippling around tile country. Husbands hur ried home to take notes. Wives made disparaging com ments between the speed at which Bucknell worked and the snail's pace of their mates at the same ta.sk. Thousands of letters de luged the BBC. A fair num ber demanded or begged that Bucknell explain to wives that for every 20 minutes he spent before the camera com pleting a repair job there were hours of preparation thnt the viewers did not see.
