TELEVISION PROGRAMS Christmas Traffic Appears Heavier; Caution Is Urged Medford Chief of Police Charles P. Champlin said to day that Christmas traffic this year seems heavier than last year, and urged both drivers and pedestrians to help ease congestion by obey ing all signs and signals. Champlin pointed to five city streets in the downtown area which tend to become particularly congested: Cen tral ave. from Fourth to Ninth sts.. Fifth st. from Riv erside avc. to Front st., Bart lett st. from Fifth to Eighth sts., Front st. from Sixth to Ninth sts. and Sixth st. from Front st. to Riverside ave. The chief urged that Med ford residents avoid those streets if possible on their way to and from work in the downtown area. 'No Turn' Signs On In an effort to help reduce the congestion in the core area during the Christmas season, Champlin said the "No Turn" signs are going to be put in operation be tween 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. dur ing the evenings that the downtown stores remain open. Drivers trying to ti rn from a wrong lane or trying to get a parking spot on the oppo site side of the street can create an adverse traffic situation, Champlin pointed out. "If you can't get in the proper position for a turn or some other maneuver, don't risk an accident by turning from the wrong lane or try ing to force your "vay in to the proper position at the last minute," he cautioned. Champlin also reminds drivers not to "double park" while waiting to pick up a shopper. He added that those who change lanes unsafely or "double park" are subject to citation. Traffic rules are for the protection of everyone, he noted. December produces more accidents than any oth er month of the year. Many of these accidents could be prevented if drivers would put a little of the Christmas spirit in their driving and treat others with courtesy and patience, Champlin Raid. Chicago -fliPD- Tht Indiana Employment Security division says preliminary estimates of Indiana's employment at mid October indicate that approxi mately 1,468,000 Hoosiers had nonfarm jobs, 69,000 fewer than September's peak.
