V ' ' ' MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 12. 1962 B 9 Brees Discusses American Way of Life for Rotary The people of the U.S. long ago vindicated a way of life and most of those who advo cate socialistic or totalitarian systems against free capital istic methods are today bene ficiaries of U.S. aid. This was emphasized in a luncheon address here Tues day by Dr. Orlo M. Brees, lecturer and spokesman for the American Manufacturers' association. Speaking at a meeting of the Medford Rotary club at the Rogue Valley Country club, Dr. Brees pointed out that Americans who debate comparative systems of gov ernment with others are forced to defend the obvious and that Is difficult. "Don't defend - demon strate!" he said. The American Manufactur ers' association is comprised of businesses of all kinds and all sizes, and 90 per cent of the membership is represent ed by small firms. Americans, Dr. Brees said, are competi tive people by nature and love a contest. In this way of life, however, there must be a generous mixture of team work and cooperation in com petitive business. In discussing socialism, Dr. Brees recalled the old French axiom that "a man who is not a socialist at 20 has no heart; a man who is a socialist at 30 has no head." To remove profit is to re move individual incentive and discourage creative ability. The socialistic philosophy is one of bankruptcy, Dr. Brees insisted. He reminded his audience of David Niven's classic observation of social ism in England. Here is an island built on coal and sur rounded by fish, the actor said, and socialism has suc cessfully created a shortage of both in the British Isles. In discussing realtionships within industry, the speaker stressed the fact that coopera tion and competition are com plementary. Dr. Brees, who is a graduate of Columbia university and Oxford University of Eng land, was introduced by Mor ris B. Leonard, Sr. Air Force Launches Missile at Vandenberg Vandenberg AFB, Calif. -(UPll-The Air Force announced an Atlas D missile was launched today from this Pa cific missile base. A spokesman said the launch was part of a "routine training" program conducted by a 576th Air Force Strategic Missile Squadron crew. He declined to elaborate further on the missile launch. Moscow-lUPli-Chinese Com munist Ambassador Pan Tzu li presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko Tuesday, the Soviet news agency Tass reported.
