INC ft TRAPPED BY SNOW Trapped by heavy snow in Brunswick, Ohio, this string of trucks, cars, and a bus waited to be freed by road crew who labored several days fol lowing the heavy snowstorm which blanket ed the midwest. Over 100 persons were trapped in the town by the storm. The town was cut off from the outside area and a plea was sent for aid by the mayor. (UPI) Winter Control For Blackberries Ray Hubbell, Jackson coun ty weed supervisor, is recom mending dormant cane broad cast spraying for blackberry control. Hubbell said that he has received g number of calls from landowners asking how to rid areas of blackberries. Local tests show such treat ment can rid restricted areas of blackberry problems. After Leaf Drop Dormant cane broadcast in volves use of 2-ethylhexyl ester of 2,4-D andor 2,4,5-T in a diescl or fuel oil carrier of six to eight pounds per 100 gallons. Any concentrated for mulation of four pounds 2.4,5-T formulated to mix with straight diescl will work equally as well. Hubbell warned that many brush kill er formulas have restrictions on use with oil. Read the label, he added. The dormant spray should be made after leaf drop in the fall and prior to spring budding, he said. Low pres sures should be used and ap plications made on calm days to dry stems and wet to th point of run-off. The volume per acre will depend on the growth den sity of the blackberry bushes. Follow-up sprays should b planned on and applied if and when needed. If this is not done, two or three years' growth will result. Although the per gallon cost is considerably higher than the water-diluted foliage mix tures, Hubbell said, cost per acre should be lower due to less material required. Peter Small, 35, a well known British diver and jour nalist, died of an air embolism after being brought to the sur face. During the scientific ex periment, safely diver Chris topher Duncan Whittaker, 21, slipped beneath the surface of the water and failed to re turn. Small and Hannes Keller, 28, who hoped to prove the effectiveness of a secret gaseous mixture as a means of avoiding the "bends." were pulled unconscious from a div ing bell after returning from a l.nuu-foot descent. The ill-fated experiment stirred up a controversy and caused Los Angeles County Coronor Theodore J. Curphey to ronsider calling an inquest. A dispute arose bPtween th coroner and Keller, who said Small died of a heart attack. The coroner claimed Small "died of gas embolism - simi lar to the bends. ' "This business of the Swiss professor's preserving the se crecy of the composition of the gasses doesn't sound like something a reputable scien tist would do," Curphey said. "We are making thorough studies to determine the na ture of the gasses used."
