Inter-Community Group Has Names Of Needy Families The Jackson County Inter Community Council's Christ mas bureau has been receiv ing the names of needy fam ilies throughout the past week find will continue to do so un til Christmas baskets are dis tributed on Dec. 21. Each year the Christmas bureau accepts applications for baskets for needy fam ilies. The purpose of the scrv Ire is to coordinate the ef forts of the community to see that all families are cared for during the Christmas season mid to help eliminate dupli cation of services. Each year between 400 and 4S0 families ere provided for through this bureau. Residents knowing of a needy family are asked to rail the name in to the bureau. The names of families are now available for groups and organizations wishing to pro vide a Christmas basket this year. Interested persons may rail the Red Cross office, 172 4403. Park and Recreation Di rector Robert Haworth told the council he had arrived at the figure by taking an aver age of estimates supplied to him by three different firms-. The actual cost of the de velopment plan, which may be less than the sum appropri ated, will depend on the amount of information which his staff can furnish the park planners. The more work his staff can do, the less the cost will be, Haworth said. (Haworth opened prelimin ary negotiations with one of the three firms Friday. If the negotiations proceed satisfac torily, Haworth said initial studies on the development plan may get under way as early as mid-month.) Other Action In other action, the council voted to; -Repeal an ordinance passed at the Nov. 20 council meeting which provided for withdrawing from the special districts areas recently an nexed to the city in the Kings Highway Water district and the Medford Rural Fire Pro tection district. Subsequently, it was found that legal de scriptions specifying the areas were incomplete. A rehearing was called for Dec. 20. -Authorize the payment of $2,326.45 to the lirm oi Jones, Reeder and Bashaw, associat ed attorneys in the R. A. Heinlz vs. City of Medford suit. An initial payment of $2,000 was paid the firm on Nov. 20. -Provide for the issuance of City of Medtord improvement bonds, series E. Davey, 2701 Lawrence Christmas Trees Need Lots of Water Salem - Water is hard to beat as a means of keeping indoor Christmas trees fresh, says Charles Ladd, chief farm forester. In addition to maintaining the tree in peppy condition, fire hazard will be reduced considerably, he added. To obtain best results, make a new cut at the tree's base - preferably on a diagonal. Then erect the Yuletide cen terpiece in a container of water. The diagonal cut helps the tree take up moisture, was his advice. The container should he re plenished with fresh water each day, as the tree will con sume a surprising amount, Ladd continued. . Jacobson. dis trict manager of the Medford Social Security office. Work for any business firm a sales person, cashier, or other job is covered by social security, and employers must have a social security number for each employee to report these w'ages. Jacobson said that although the total wages paid may not seem significant now, even tually they accumulate and will be used in figuring the , total amount of monthly social security benefit payments. Women who have had social security numbers in the past and who have married and changed their names should report their new name to their social security office. Social security records should show this name change, but the same number originally issued will be used. When people are hired they should be sure to show their social security number to their employer. The employer can then report the number accurately on the tax return used to report wages paid. Erin M e r k e 1, Jackson county public health officer. Ashland reported one case. Shady Cove, Medford and Central Point each reported four. Other communicable disease cases reported were one case of mumps for Medford and Ashland, two cases of measles for Ashland, two cases of Ger man measles for Medford, and one case of scalp ringworm for Talent.
