i 6 A FHIDAY. 1957 Award of Merit Winner 1 CHURCH NEWS mm National Christmas Festival Is Scheduled Sunday The Cnnerpeational church will meet lor worship and church school at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Hoover Grade school on Siskiyou blvd. at South Modoc rd. The Rev. Robert W. Tull, minister of the church, will preach the second in a series of Advent sermons dealing with the meaning and the message of the persons in volved in the birth of Jesus. This week's topic is "The Wise Men-They Offered Him Gifts.' " As a part of the morning service of worship, the mem bers and friends of the church will make their pledges of financial support to the church's budget lor 1963. At the congregational meeting Nov. 25, the budget for the coming year was set at $13,936 for operating ex penses and benevolences. Those who are not able to make their pledges duruig the church service this Sun day will be visited during the Victory Dinner Planned by Vied ford Friends Church Mcdford Friends church,' Merriman and DeBarr aves., will hold a victory dinner Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. In the new Fellowship hall. The event marks the completion of a three-year building drive during which a new sanctu ary and social hall were con structed. A similar dinner held three years ago In the Medford hotel resulted in $50,000 be ing pledged for this puroosc. IE62 Religious Publicity Council following week Christmai Festival The fourth annual all church Christmas festival which had to be postponed last Sunday because of the flood conditions, will be held Sunday from 2:30 to 6 p.m The festival will be held at the YMCA building. A Christmas craft work shop will open the festival at 2:30 p.m. It will be followed by caroling and worship at 4:30 p.m. and a fellowship supper at 5:15 p.m. Those at tending the festival will be expected to take table service, a salad, and a loaf of French bread, buttered and wrapped in foil. Tuesday the newly organ ized mid-high study fellow ship for ninth and tenth graae young people will meet from 4 to 5 p. m. in Mr. Tull's study at the Welty house. Tuesday evening the regu lar monthly meetings of the board and committees of the church will be held. The master of ceremony for the dinner will be Dr. Claude Lewis, Central Point, chair man of the Friends church fi nance board. Speakers in clude former pastors, Dr. Milo C. Ross, now president of George Fox college. New berg, Oregon, Clynton G. Crisman, now assistant su perintendent of the Friends Church of the Northwest, and J. L. Wlllculs, present pas tor of the Mcdford Friends church. The dinner will be catered by North's restaurant for approximately 150 adults. Fu ture plans of the church will be presented. The congrega tion, with a Sunday, school attendance of around 275, will discuss securing a full time Christian education and youth director and a full-time church .secretary instead of the parlime personnel which have served ill the past. Hendricks, re tired missionary to Japan, will be the guest speaker at both services Sunday morn ing at the First Christian church. Sunday is observed as Wo men's day and members of the Christian Women's Fel lowship will assist with the services. Mr. Hendricks will preach on the subject "God's Power at Work in Japan.'' Entering the world mission in U121, Mr. Hendricks and his wife were stationed in Tokyo. When the disastrous earthquakes and resulting fires swept the city hi 1923 Mr. Hendricks worked in emergency relief service. They returned to the slates in 1932 and Mr, Hendricks studied at Yale University. They returned to Japan in 1948 and Mr. Hendricks join ed the faculty of the Chris tian High School for Boys in Tokyo. The Hendricks' retired from active foreign mission work in June 1962 after 28 years of service and now re side at Woodburn. The youth choir will sing at the first service and at the 10:55 a.m. service the combined chancel and caril lon choirs will sing "My Sheep Were Grazing." A meeting' of the official church board has been called for 9:45 a.m. Sunday. Fellowship Dinner There will be an all-church fellowship dinner at 12:30 p.m. Sunday immediately fol lowing the second worship service. During the afternoon Mr. Hendricks will show slides of his work in Japan. Southern Baptists To End Week of Prayer Toni "Adults for Christ" will be the topic of the sermon the Rev. G. O. Skaar, pastor, First Southern Baptist church, will preach Sunday morning. The adult choir will sing. Also on this date 1 Catholics attending mass throughout Ihe world will hear the name of Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, read in the Communicantes of the mass for the first time. The addition of Joseph's name is the first major change in the part of the mass known as the Canon since the sixth century and was accomplish ed largely through the efforts of priests and laymen alike, who, since 1815, have been petitioning for this honor for St. Joseph. In 1870, at the time of the First Vatican council, Pope Pius IX hon ored a petition by naming the saint the patron of the Uni versal church. Last year Pope John proclaimed St. Joseph the protector of the coming ecumenical council. Tomorrow will also bu the Saturday of the monthly ador ation program in Sacred Heart church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin at 1 p.m. with general parish adoration continuing until 9 p.m. and the men's nocturnal adoration beginning at that time and continuing until 6 a.m. Sunday. at Service the 7 p.m. service. Sunday night the pastor begins a se ries of pre-Christmas mes sages on "They Heard the An gels Sing." Christmas Program Christmas program plan ning is well under way at First Nazarene and the first full practice of all the chil dren's departments for the Christmas program will be held Rt 9:30 a.m. Saturday. This annual Christmas pro gram is to be presented Dec. 21, with Mrs. John Finkbciner serving as Ihe pageant direc tor. Mr. Christiansen, minister of music, has announced the calendar of Christmas musi cal events. In the 7 p.m. serv ice Dec. 16 the sanctuary choir will give a full Christmas can tata and the several children's choirs will hold a vesper serv ice at 4 p.m. Dec. 23. This year a large Christmas card has been placed on the Missionary bulletin board. Many members are not send ing Christmas cards to one another this year. Instead they are giving the money to world missions which normally would be spent for cards and postage. Then their names are signed on the large Christmas card in the vestibule of t h e church. Program of Bible Films Is Announced Ashland - The Church of Christ, which meets in Ash land across from Lithia park, has announced plans to organ ize a program of Bible films. These films may be shown to individuals in their own home, on a schedule mutually agreeable to those wanting to see the films and to the evan gelist. Fred Riemer, Ashland. Mr. Riemer said that the se ries of pictures includes five filmstrips. The first three are on the Bible: the fourth deals with God's plan to save man, and the last one is a brief sur vey of church history. Phona 779-1711 Former Valley Resident Returns From New Guinea Central Point - Missions and missionaries will be em phasized next week at the Community Bible church, Fourth and Alder sts., Central Point. The Rev. William Mallon, missionary to New Guinea and a native of the Rogue val ley, will speak Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Mr. and Mrs. Mallon will also be featured at a Tuesday program when the cantata, "The Greatest Story Yet Un told," will be presented by the church's choir. The cantata will be Tues day, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. and will be under the auspices of the Women's Missionary so ciety. The cantata was written and compiled by Eugene L. Clark. It will be presented un der the direction of Mrs. Wal lace Sousa and will take the place of the customary Christ mas cantata. The Christmas gift offering for the missionaries sponsored by the church will be receiv ed at the close of the eve ning's program. Mr. Mallon left the valley in 1959. He is a graduate of Crater High school and took his theological training at the Prairie Bible Institute at Three Hills, Alberta. He is currently home on furlough after completing his first term of missionary ser ice under the auspices of the Regions Beyond Missionary Union. Eastwood Baptist Activities Noted Sunday at the morning wor ship service at Eastwood Bap tist church, the pastor, the Clifford J. Young, will speak on: "That Extraordinarily Common Man," using Luke 2:1-20 as scriptural back ground. The chancel choir will sing, "Heavenly Light." The chil dren's message will be "Shar ing." The junior Baptist Youth Fellowship will have its Christmas program dress re hearsal Sunday at 6 p.m. The Senior High BYF will meet at 6:30 p.m. with a Christmas hymn program with Linda Morse as presi dent.
