14 C THURSDAY, DECEMBER . 1362 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Himalaya Peasant Refugees Living in Makeshift Homes Kpw rinlhl -lUPl) More than 8.000 refugees from the Hima layan mountain areas overrun by the Communist Chinese are living in thatched hut camps and makeshift quarters in Assam state today and wondering what comes next. The refugees for the most part are long-haired, moon faced Mompas, who fled be fore the Chinese October at tack from the valley homes where their kind have lived for hundreds of years. First, they fled the monas tery town of Towang to Bom dl La, and then went from Bomdi La to the plains of As sam when the Chinese struck again. They walked, rode tiny mountain ponies or were car ried by truck from the fight ing areas In the northeast frontier agency (NKFA) to the refugee camps in Assam. The Assam State govern ment undertook to help them by setting up makeshift camps Suuth of the Brahmaputra riv er near Tezpur, and in Gau hati, 100 miles farther to the southwest, wheie they are be ing housed in school and col lege buildings. Record Demand Noted for Grads In Teaching Field Corvallis - A record num-notes in her report. Oppor- ber of requests for teachers were handled by the Oregon State University Teacher Placement office the past year and the over-all Job outlook for graduates this year is as good or better. But opportunities are con siderably brighter in some teaching fields than others and school administrators are "much more choosy than ever before" in selection of new teachers, says Mrs. Kathryn H. Smith. Teacher Placement program director at OSU 1 a former school superintend ent. More well-trained elemen tary teachers are especially needed now - and will be for years to come - Mrs. Smith tunities are especially good for men in elementary edu cation, she added. Biggest teacher shortage fields in junior and -senior high schools the past year included the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, math), English (particularly women teachers), foreign languages, girls physical education, and library. College Opportunities A steady demand exists for teachers of agriculture, home economics and Industrial arts. College teacher opportunities are getting better each year with rapidly increasing en rollments In higher education The OSU Teacher Place ment Office had more than "X ' I JUST . Freighter Breaks Info Three Parts Coos Bay-IUPD-The stricken lumber ship Alaska Cedar of Portland has broken into three parts, the Coast Guard said. The 256-foot vessel, carry ing a load of lumber, was smashed onto the north jetty at Coos Bay Sunday. A heli copter helped rescue Its crew of 24 men. A spokesman for the Coast Guard said the center section of the ship had dropped off the jetty into the water. The forward and after sections were on the jetty, the spokes man said. In their bulky robes, felt clothes and leather boots, they drink thick tea and wonder what their next move will be. Most are expected to return to their Himalayan homes in the wake of any Red Chinese withdrawals. Many will return after their first look at the Indian plains with some serious doubts about the future and their In dian protectors. "(Prime Minister Jawaharlal) Nehru is a great leader. Why does he not hurl these invaders from our land? "When you allow them into your house, it is difficult to get rid of them. Is it not fool ish to venture into a threaten ing storm without umbrellas? Why not prepare fully for the next storm?" Indian officials are not commenting, but one of their toughest problems if Indian control is re-established throughout the NEFA will be to regain the confidence of the tribesmen. For the past 15 years, Indian administrators have been at work establish ing contact in the wild tribal area which the British left largely alone when they con trolled India. India's crushing defeat at the hands of the Red Chinese is expected to make the tribes men dubious of New Delhi's authority. One newsman observed that "Indian troops are unlikely to be greeted by cheers when and if they return to Bombi La and Towang. The Chinese also are expect ed to leave behind Mompa agents of their own, which will force the Indians to crack down on some natives for se curity reasons and probably thereby breed dissention. Furs Make Gills For All Ages Wife or mother, sister or fiancee, or perhaps your fa vorite aunt if she's a wom an, then it's a sure thing she's the type for fur. Of course your budget and her tastes will be determining factors in your final selection, but there are inviting selec tions of a multitude of fur coats, stoles, jackets and little accessories to help you select just the right fur for her. A luxurious fur stole or cape will transform Mrs. Homemaker into a glamour queen; Miss Career will thrill at a fur boa, scarf or petite cape of mink or other fine fur. Miss Collegienne will cheer loudly at a pert fur jacket to wear to football games or top her date frocks. Furs this year are a verita ble wonderland of long and short haired beauties; colors are most fanciful in natural shades, as well as tints, dyes and mutations. Mink comes in a wide range of exciting hues from White-to-blues to browns-to-black. Even "littlest angels" will love a bunny hat, jacket, muff or scarf they're never too young (or too old) for fur. You'll be saying "Merry Christmas" loud and clearly when you find that just right fur for your special someone. l1 xjal NtT" "f For Your Convenience & Savings-Big Double load Washeri IAUNDROMAT STEWAKf-, IITH For ALL Mothers . . . f Give a If Your CREDIT Is GOOD . .
