Truck on Runway Studied as Cause Of Plane Crash Washington - TO - Investi gators today looked into the possibility that a maintenance truck, lost in the fog, blunder- ed across the runway Just before an airliner crashed and killed 25 persons last Friday night at Idlcwild Airport. They said it might be the reason why Capl. Edward Bechtold, who died in the wreck, tried to abort his land ing. They theorized that he mistook the truck for an air plane in the fog. Fog Patch Evident Sources close to the investi gation said evidence still seems to show that a large and extremely thick patch of fno mnveri over the runway as Bechtold brought his East ern Air Line DC7B in, rob- blng him of all forward vi sion. They theorized that if a maintenance truck wandered over the runway accidentally, Bechtold might nave seen only the glow from the flash ing red licht atop the ve hicle. He might have thought it was the plane that landed just ahead of him. Lacked Visual Reference "His first thought would have been 'My God, I'm going to hit a plane full of people,' " one Investigator said. "His first reaction would have been to pull up instantly and go around at the very sec ond he was almost committed to a landine and when his airspeed was low. "The foe he Drobablv en- rnnntpred wnulri have made things even worse because he undoubtedly lacked, truck or no truck, any visual reference to the ground."
