I POST OFFICE I Open Until 9 p.m. Tonila 1 Village Variety I Srewjrr nor King Selma Section of Highway Planned Salem -IUPII- The Stale High way Commission has an nounced plans to rebuild the Hcgan creek to Selma section of the Redwood Highway south of Selma in Josephine county. The proposed construction will eliminate a long, curving section of the highway, and a new bridge with a 30-foot road-way will replace the ex isting narrow span over Deer creek. Length nf the proposed con struction is 1.37 miles. The highway would be built to modern standards and would have 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot shoulders. The relo cated section would be to the east nf the existing highway, the department said. A map showing the pro posed project has been pre sented In the Josephine Coun ty Court. Persons wishing to express opinions for consider ation in the tinal plans may ' request a hearing before rcp- i rescntatives of the commission by contacting the Josephine County Court,, the commis sion announced. Eugene - A deep thcologi cal gulf exists between mem bers of the Baptist and Metho dist clergy In Oregon, andthis amerence oi opinion is re flected In the ministers' atti tudes on political questions. These findings have result cd from a research survey conducted early this fall by Dr. G. Benton Johnson, asso ciate professor of sociology at the University of Oregon. Questionnaires were sent to all Baptist clergymen in Ore gon affiliated with the Con servative, Southern, Ameri can, Swedish, and German di visions of the faith, and to all pastors of The Methodist church in the state. This is the largest Methodist body in the U. S. and docs not include the Wesleyan or the Free Meth odists. Among the Baptists, 7 per cent responded, and 82 per cent of the Methodists return ed the questionnaires. Purpose of the study, ac cording to Dr. Johnson, was "to find out the extent of the ological diversity between the two denominations in this state and also to find out the relationship, if any, between these theological commit ments and attitudes toward public issues.'' Conducting Studies Dr. Johnson for the past several years has been con ducting studies of the tie-ins between religious faith and participation, political affilia tion, social attitudes, and vo ting behavior. "The Baptists are over whelmingly theologically and politically conservative," Dr. Johnson reported, "and this is true of all the Baptist de nominations surveyed." Although elsewhere in the country, the American Bap tists include theological liber als, "those in Oregon are al most unanimously of conserv ative theological opinion," he observed. A majority of the Metho dists turned out to be rela tively liberal in theology and politics, although there is a strong conservative minority among them, Dr. Johnson re ported. One of the major areas of theological difference invol ves attitudes toward cschatol ogy, which deals with such matters as death, resurrec tion, Judgment, and the sec ond coming of Christ, the re port revealed. Premillennialiim Beliefs In this area, " large major ity of Baptists said that they believed in prcmillennialism, while virtually no Methodist minister reported belief in it,1 Dr. Johnson said. Apparently reflecting these theological divergences, "some of the sharpest differ ences among the clergymen are to be found in the area of politics," according to Dr. Johnson's findings. Ninety per cent of the Bap tist pastors reported that they considered themselves "po litirnllv ennKervative ." and 83 they had tended to support the Republican party during the last five years. "On the other hand," Dr. Johnson pointed out, "two thirds of the Methodist min isters reported that they were political liberals, although slightly more than half of them indicated that they had supported the Republican party in recent years. This perhaps reflects the conserv ative strain which is still found among the Methodists." Condemn Gambling In the field of morals, "both groups equally and over whelmingly condemn ganv bling and are rather solidly opposed to the use of alco hol," Dr. Johnson said. In general, the Baptists arc more opposed to smoking, card-playing, and theatergo ing than are the Methodists, he noted. "The divergences noted In the study probably represent cleavages of long standing, differences which have de veloped over the last one hun dred years at least," Dr. John son explained. "In the early part of the century, the Methodist church took an active part in the So cial Gospel movement, which was dedicated to changing so ciety along the lines advoca ted by political liberals. Al though many Baptists were involved in this movement, the great body of Baptists, especially in the West, were opposed to it, he continued. Fundamentalist - Modernist Furthermore, many of the theological differences are a legacy of the fundamentalist- modernist controversy which shook a good many Proteslant denominations in the 1030s," he pointed out. The similarity In attitude toward such matters as drink ing and gambling "may be traced to the historical unity which a great many Protest- ant denominations have forged on certain moral ques tions," Dr. Johnson said. "It undoubtedly reflects the Puritan tradition which is still a part of the American culture," he added. I This unanimity in matters i of conventional morality fits I in very well with the fact that both the Baptist and Metho dist denominations were strong supporters of the Pro hibition movement In the 1920s, Dr. Johnson observed.
