(UP1) The Medical Roundup r onsullant In Medlcme Mayo Cltnir Emeritus Professor nf Medicine Mayo Clinic (Register and Trihune Syndicate, Talus of Old Peopla Kach week I get dozens nf letters from old people who psk why thev have one or Alvsrirz mote pains. Somehave been told they have a neuritis, but this diagnosis has not help ed them. Of ten, all the word neuritis means is that the person has pain; Dr. Norman P. Golci Mein, of I he Mayo Clinic, men tions nine different types of agents Hint can injure a per son's nerves so as to cause pain and weakness. There can be a mechanical cause, such as the compression of a nerve under a ligament or in the scar of an old fracture or dis location or laceration. There are thousands of elderly wom en who, after falling and Ret ting a broken hip, suffer long months with pain. There are thousands of peo ple with sciatica that may have followed a fall which injured the lower part of the spine or the nerves that come out of it. A number of these nerves join together to form the sciatic nerve which goes down the back of the thigh. There are people who suffer pain after an x-ray treatment for a tumor somewhere. Rarely one sees a person whose nerves have been poi soned by some chemical, such as arsenic. On the market to day are many drugs which ran injure nerves and cause pain. Whenever I see a per son who is suffering from ptizitnc pain, or for that mat ter any peculiar symptom, i a.-k him immediately to slop t-ikina whatever drills he is using to see if this will bring i chef. Then Micro are the infec tions of the nerves, such as that of shingles, and rarely I today old syphilis of the ner-j vous system. Tuberculosis can j alloc! the nerves, also infee-j tious hepatitis or mumps or "cal-serateh fever." Many pains called neuritie are real lv due to arthritis or bursitis or tenosynovitis (an inflam mation nf sheaths of tendons). Pain can be caused by a rare disease called sarcoidosis i whuh looks like tuberculosis, j but isn't. We don't know the cause of it. i Drug Reaction Some people get pain be cause of a reaction to some rime like penicillin. In the rases of old men, "hatching" and living on little, some pair.s are thought to be due In a nnnr nutrition and lack nf vitamins. There can be nnmbPf.-s and tingling and pain due to pernicious ane mia. Common is the neuritis of chronic alcoholism. Thousands of people get ra,n because of Pc neuritis o riiahctrs Sometimes a per son's oMbcics is discoered when Pr comes with severe pain m a number nf hi nrres Son'c persons who lack "iyroid secir'ion have pains Other chemical dislurb- ine nony iuhi ihum tout, porphyria, and f, Amyloid i a starch-pudding sort of materi al which rarely forms in parts of the bodies of persons usually those who have suf fered from a chronic inflam mation somewhere. Many pains are due to hardening of the arteries or periarteritis nodosa (a disease in which sections of arteries here and there are badly inflamed), or little strokes. Other painful diseases are lupus erythematosus (a di sease that affects the skin and the internal organs), an giitis obliterans (a disease which tends to shut off the blood that goes to the legs). Better See Neurologists Often the man with pains pains here and there had bet ter see a neurologist (nerve specialist) who may perhaps be able to find the cause. Rarely, people suffer pain because of a little tumor on the spinal cord or on a nerve, such as perhaps one of the nerves that come out of the spine. Hundreds of old peo ple have severe pain due to a cancer that has scattered and perhaps is growing in bones or along the sheaths around nerves. There is a special type of painfull can cer of the bones called mul tiple myeloma. . I hope that this mention of some of the many causes of pain will help my thousands of correspondents to under stand why so often I just cannot give them a worth while opinion as to the cause of a pain they have. There are too many causes and many are hard to determine. As most of my correspondents say, they have seen a num ber of physicians who had trouble making a diagnosis. What 1 would do if I had a puzzling type of pain would be to go to some large medi cal center where I could have an expert neurologist check me to try to find out what really is wrong. Nerves play bad tricks on people and may cause much tenseness and pain. You will understand the workings of your nerves belter if you read Dr. Alvariz' 25-cent booklet, Triumph over Nervousness. You may obtain a copy by sending 25 cents and a self addressed, stamped envelope with your request for it to Dr Walter C. Alvarez, Dept. M.MT.
