Ducks Nip Washington Club 59-57 Seattle -il'Pli- The Oregon Ducks found a new hero here Tuesday night in hometown boy Elliott Gleason, who pro vided the Webfoot with their winning points in a 59-57 win over Washington. The Ducks proved them selves a power to be reckoned with in the Northwest as they collected their second victory in three games this year. Gleason, a six-foot sopho more from Seattle, calmly sank two free throws with 30 seconds to play in noise-filled Edmundson Pavilion to put the game out of reach of the Huskies. Free throws accounted for the last 14 Oregon points as the Huskies got over-anxious on their full-court press in the closing minutes. Washington forward Steve Wilson led all scorer with 20 points and teammate Dale Eas ley added 15. Forward Steve Jones scored 17, center Glenn Moore 15 and Gleason 10 for Oregon. Baker received an Earl Blaik fellowship for graduate study. (UP1) White, USC Gain Principal Awards New York -IUPU- Supreme Court Justice Byron R. (Whiz zer) White and the University of Southern California foot ball team received the major awards Tuesday night at the annual dinner of the Nation al Football foundation and Hall of Fame. White, a former All-America halfback at Colorado and later a pro star in the Nation al Football league, was award ed the foundation's Gold Medal fox his contributions to the sport. Previous recipients of the Gold Medal were three presi dents - Dwight Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover and "o'.n F. Kennedy - and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. Southern California receiv ed the MacArthur Bowl as the nation's top college foot ball team of 1962. It was ac- Trojans Garner Major Honors In Statistics San Francisco (UPIt The Big Six finished the best football season on the Pacific Coast in many years with national champion Southern California capturing its major statistical titles. UCLA still has to meet Syr acuse on Saturday; but can not take the Trojans titles away from them. USC captured total offense with 327 yards per game and defense with 238 yards per contest allowed. Washington led the lcauge in rushing with 251 yards per contest and in rushing defense with 117 yards allowed. California was the league's passing champion with 180 yards gained per contest. UCLA has the best air defense with 100 yards per game but could lose the lead to USC (104) should the Bruins allow Syracuse a lot of yards pass ing Saturday. But the record the league could be most proud of was its 32-24-3 season mark not count ing the UCLA-Syracuse tilt. Only California 1-9 and UCLA 4-5 were below .500 while the Trojans 10-0 and Washington 7-1-2 were national powers Washington State 5-4-1 and Stanford 5-5 round out the conference. Seattle Takes Lead in North United Press International Seattle has displaced Van couver atop the western Hockey league's Northern di vision thanks to the fancy foot-work of Totem goalie Al Millar. ; Seattle nipped Edmonton, I 3-1, and Spokane bounced i Vancouver, 5-3, to move the Seattle club two points ahead of the Canucks. Millar was under attack all night at Edmonton, but when ' the contest was over, Seattle 1 had handed Edmonton .its sixth straight home defeat and its 15th setback in the last 16 games. Rudy Fillion, Don Ward and Jim Towers scored for Seattle while Lou Marcon scored for Edmonton. Spokane moved out to a 4-1 lead after two periods when Vancouver fought back. Bob McCusker and Trend Beatty tallied for Vancouver who pulled goalie Gillcs Villemeur out of the nets in the dying moments in an all-out gamble to knot the score. Nebraska has appeared in two previous bowl games, los ing to Duke in the Orange Bowl in 1955. 34-7, and to a Frankie Albert-led Stanford team in the 1941 Rose Bowl. 21-13.
