June S. - I say let's try once more, despite two mis carriages. Alex S. - We've been mar ried four years now, settled In a little love nest of a home. As soon as June became preg nant, we moved out to a new development along with oth er ncwlywcds, and now we're the only family on the block ' without a baby. June suffer ed a miscarriage a month aft er our arrival. The doctor told us not to worry. But she miscarried again last year, losing the baby in the fourth month. That's enough for me. I say let's resiun ourselves to not having our own and adopt one. But June thinks some hormone treatment will help and she's ready to go through the whole agony again. She should accept the fact that somethings wrong and go on from there. June S. - It would be so wonderful to have our own baby that I'm grabbing at the cllher-or talk of thn doc tor, the maybe and the itiisht be, and giving myself the ben efit of the doubt. He says my miscarriages came from a certain weakness of the uterus and that maybe now, after strengthening it with hor mones, 1 can go through a full-term pregnancy. Tile first accident came right after we'd moved and 1 feel 1 must have brought it on by lifting heavy boxes and Jumping up and down ladders. And last time 1 was overactive entertaining my sister and her twins on a visit. But now I'll watch it, Bet plenty of bed-rest, and we'll come through fine, I'm tire. Even If Al can't believe It ' and the doctor won't promise, 1 11 have our baby yet. e The Council-We'd go along with brave young June here. The S.'s have a head start over other childless couples who long for a baby. June fertility. Their problem cen ters upon the vitality of the embryo and condition of the uterus which must shelter it. The news on those themes is good. Nature is kind. When it ends a pregnancy through miscarriage, it's usually a pregnancy that should be end ed because It's not "all there." Something is usually defec tive, and since there's no point holding on to a hopeless, im perfect growth, Nature "evicts" it via a miscarriage Since June's doctor attrib ulcs her difficulties to an ab normality which he is endeav oring to correct, she and Alex shouldn't be d 1 s couraged from trying to have children Dr. James P. Vounghlood, an obstetrician at the Universi ty of Michigan Medical Cen ter states that the "spontane ous abortion is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, ending one out of every ten. He advises cou ples to wait three to six months after the miscarriage before courting a new preg nancy, in order to give the womb time to heal. Of course if disaster strikes again, June's doctor may then decide that there is a less common condition underly ing her miscarriages, and go on a hunt for a full diagnosis of which this is but a symp tom. Such conditions include severe diabetes, chronic kid ney disease and tuberculosis. Always, too, is the suspicion that "emotional factors" arc the culprits. But as matters stHiid Alex and June are still very much in the running as natural pa rents. There s no real evi dence to the contrary.
