OREGON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4. 1962 And They Haven't Played A Game Yet UPI Basketball Coaches Poll Ranks Beavers 5th In Nation Baker Is NFL'sTop Draft Choice; LA Rams Pick Him New York - lliPH - The Uni versity of Cincinnati, whioh displayed an awesome attack in its opening game o the season, today was a near unanimous selection as I he nation's No. 1 college basket ball team in the first weekly balloting of the United Press International Board of Coaches. The Bearcats were selected as the top team by 33 of the 35' famous coaches who com prise the UPI board and were named second by the two dis senters. Thus Cincinnati re ceived 348 points of a possible 350 as it begins its campaign to capture the national title won the last two years by Ohio State. Major casualties in the first week's voting were Kentucky and St. Bonaventure, each of which suffered a stunning up set in season openers last Sat urday. Kentucky had been rated third in the coaches' pre season forecast and the Bon nies ranked eighth. The Wildcats, who lost an 80-77 decision to Virginia Tech, dropped to 14th in the ratings while St. Bonaven ture, a 73-66 loser to Southern Illinois, fell entirely from the list. Duke, which received the other two first-place votes, re mained second with Loyola of Chicago moving from fifth to third, West Virginia retaining fourth place and Oregon State moving up a notch to fifth. Tile board -of coaches will rate the nation's teams weekly throughout the season and points are compiled on a basis of 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for votes from first place through 10th. A permanent trophy will be presented by UPI to the top team in the country as the end of the season. On a point basis, Duke re ceived 285, Loyola got 194, West Virginia 176 and Oregon State 141. Mississippi State was sixlh in the balloting, followed by Illinois, Kentucky, New York university, Arizona State, Ohio State, Indiana, Dayton and Southern California. Stanford was picked as a potential national top 10 squad in a pre-season UPI poll and has done nothing to change the experts minds in its first two games. The In dians blitzed Utah 81-50 Mon day as they held the Utes to 18 points in the final half. Big Tom Dose and Don Clemetson took high scoring honors for the winners with 16 apiece while slim Darrell Sutherland opened up the game by scoring seven points in a row early in the second half. Arizona State, which posted the West's best record before losing in the NCAA regionals last year, is loaded again. The Sun Devils won their 35th consecutive home court vic tory in downing Fresno State, 89-61. Tony Cerkvenik and Den nis Dairman paced the win ners with 21 and 17 points respectively. The Sun Devils have lost their brilliant play making guard, Larry Arm strong, but have a surplus of huge front court men. They could yet jell into a na tional power. Tony Burr had 19 for Fresno. Veteran Chuck White of Idaho hit 25 points, while Johnnie Johnson had 14 for the losers. In other action Monday, Arizona toppled Wiscon s i n 51-46 as the Wildcats success fully stalled the last seven minutes away. Al Johnson had 19 for the winners, but what really cost the Badgers the ball game was the fact that they meshed only 10 of the 24 free throws. Nevada toppled Weber of Utah, 78-62, thanks to the 26 points of soph center Bill Robinson. The 6-foot-5 pivot man led the Far West confer ence in scoring last year as a freshman. Other scores found Orange Slate toppling Redlands 76-55; Arizona State at Flagstaff dis posing of Colorado Western, 76-62; and Eastern Washing ton waltzing past Whitman 87-61. Five Teams In SOIBL Three teams from Medford and one each from Grants Pass and Glendale will make up the Southern Oregon Inde pendent Basketball league for the 1962-63 season, it has been announced. The Medford en tries are John Wheeler Log ging, last year's champions; Sambo's Restaurant and Drews' Manstore. It is planned to start league play the week of Dec. 17 and each team will probably play the other four times. There will be no league games dur ing Christmas and New Year's weeks, league officers said. Crater Booster Club To Meet Central Point First reg ular meeting of Crater Boost er club will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Pioneer club here. Three organizational meet ings have been held. The Boosters, formed to boost athletic teams in this community, are formed along the same line as the Medford Linebacker club. Ben Mushaney is president of the Boosters. All other members are vice presidents. Michigan Slate topped the individual schools in number of players chosen with nine, with seven players from Mi ami, Fla., and six from Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Penn State and Georgia Tech. The Big Ten ana southeastern confer ences each furnished 37 of the total. Virtually all the "name" players, plus a few surprises, were picked In the first two rounds. Baker First The big names went fast. Oregon State's quarterback Terry Baker, the Heisman Trophy winner, was the first choice, by the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams also picked guard Rufus Guthrie of Geor gia Tech on another first round selection. St. Louis, with two first round choices, went for halfback Jerry Sto vall of LSU and tackle Don Brumm of Purdue. WRIGHT WINS AGAIN Dunedin, Fla. -IUPII- The Ladies Professional Golf as sociation has named Mickey Wright of Dallas, Tex., the winner of the Vare trophy for the third straight year. Oregon tackle Ron Snidow was picked by Washington in the third round. End Vern Burke, who has another year to go at Oregon State, got a future bid in the fifth round from San Francisco. Coach Len Casanova of Ore- i gon made the lineman presen tation to Petrasso and Coach . Tommy Prothro of Oregon State presented the back award to Koenig. Petrasso, captain of David Douglas, had a 3.7 grade point average and was an all Metro league linebacker, Koenig had a 3.6 scholastic average and was a Metro all-star.
