Ethiopian airlines (EAL), with Americans in the cock pits, is gaining prestige and profit with trans-African and intercontinental service. "This particular airline has been a very successful com bination of local government and private American help, Assistant Secretary of Slate for African Affairs G. Men ncn Williams told the U.S. congress recently. EAL officials here said they expect early next year, prob ably in January, to inaugu rate jet service into Athens, Frankfurt and Madrid with two Boeing 720B jets pur chased with a loan of nearly $12 million from the U.S. Export-Import bank. "After looking over the situation in Ethiopia, I felt that the government there needed these two jets like I need a hole in the head," said U.S. Congressman Silvio O, Conte, (R-Mass.). The Civil Aeronautics board, in approving an agree ment Trans World airlines has for training Ethiopian personnel, said the agreement was consistent with U.S. pol icy of helping friendly na tions in development of their air transport systems. To a passenger boarding an EAL DCBB for a trans-African flight, it appears to be a strictly Ethiopian operation. Ethiopians load the baggage, fill the gas tanks and serve the meals. American Pilot The co-pilot is an Ethio pian. But the pilot and captain In command is an American. Airlines are a prestige item among African nalions trying to establish a name for themselves. Ghana acquired big planes but was unable to keep them in the air and leaves them sitting on the air strip. The former French terri tories known as the Biizza villc powers subordinated their individual Interests to ward establishing a viable joint airline. Others, like I.ibcrinn alr ways, arc limited to regional service. Ethiopian airlines has man aged to earn a record of de pendability across Africa and Into Europe. It has more than 10.000 route miles and in HHil had a net profit nf $ 8 million after recording an 11.5 per cent increase in pas sengers and baggage. WATKINS (Register and Tribune Syndicate 1962) filled human who now was looking down at the large, black beetle busily engaged in taking food from a group of hard working ants. The bug harassing the ants was the darkling beetle, usually found in considerable numbers un der the bark of rotting trees. Because of the strange habit of this beetle standing on its head when frightened or when caught out in the bright light of day the man had been searching for one. The head stand of this beetle is a habit that greatly interested the man, which partly explains why he was so intent on this darkling beetle stealing grain from the hard-working ants. The darkling beetles are large, black shiny bugs whose eggs hatch into "false wire worms!" They feed mostly on dead vegetable matter, and may even gather in consider able numbers at times to feed on various species of fungi. Ordinarily they are slow-moving, hiding by day and moving at night. But this large one the man was watching had taken up position beside an anthill and was robbing the ants as they came along. No Shamt This bully of a bug in Hie shiny, black jacket apparently had no shame. With flagrant disregard for the rights of oth ers smaller and weaker than himself, he crouched beside the anthill, pilfering seeds from the ants. The big bully 1 would slam one of his fore legs down on a hurrying ant, pressing the little Insect down into the earth, then grub the seed from the ant's mandibles. Slowly and with evident relish, the beetle would chew down the grain. ,, . - . . , The ant, confused and prob-1 ably fighting mad but wise enough to know when he was licked, would shake the sand from its body and, faithful to its allotcd task, rush off after another seed. There were, of course, hun dreds of ants working at the task of laying in a store of grain. There were several col umns of the little insects, hur rying both ways . . . those coming In loaded with a seed, and those going the other way with empty jaws. It had been a fortunate find on the part of some scout ant who had discovered a place where some careless person had spilled a few handfuls of grain. The scout had found it and had hurried back to the colony to alert the rest. The entire colony then followed the sccnt'lrail to the grain, and each was now going home, loaded down with a single grain. Backbreaking Work It was backbreaking work for such tiny creatures, as they had to lug the grains a considerable distance. Each grain was nearly as large as the ant that was carrying it. In and out between grass stems they came falling over small pebbles, tumbling down tiny depressions in the earth, but always hanging tightly to the seed, Intent on a single purpose to get it back to the home-hill and into the safety of the underground granary. A strange way of life ants working so hard only to be robbed when the goal is in sight. They had no way of knowing this big bully would be there, astride the line of march, readv to rob them.
