The plan is designed especial ly for use by large volume mailers such as public utilities and government agencies, but can be used by individuals as well. Mr. Zip illustrates the new plan. The first three digits Identify one of 637 sectional centers (9-Calif.; 8-Northorn Calif.; 7-Sacramcnto). Fourth and fifth digits (12) could specify either a single smaller post office served by the sec tional center, zone 12 In Sacramento, or an office building receiving large Volumes of mail. Sooner or later every visi tor to Sardinia is bound to ask: "What are those stone towers?" "They are Nuraghl," is the tisudl answer. The questioner commonly learns little more than they were built by a civilization that inhabited the Island thousands of years ago. Until less than 10 years ago archaeologists believed the Nuraghl were built during the Stone age. But ihey have since determined they were constructed by a "retarded civilization." There are about 7,00(1 nt the Nuraghi scattered all over the Island of Sardinia otf the Italian coast. Basically, they are heavy stores piled on top of each oilier in a conical shape. (V tV St. Mary' High St. Mary's High School Sodality held a general meet ing last week. Sister Mary Agatha spoke on the cell sys tem and on the methods of a good group discussion. Fol lowing the talk was a panel by Laura Batzcr, Mary Ann Carnegie, Charlotte Sokolow slti, Jim Calhoun, and Pete Naumes demonstrated the correct ncchniques of a suc cessful group discussion. Plans were discussed con cerning the dance held Fri day, Nov. 3D, as a means of raising money. The student Body attended an assembly in the all-purpose room. Bill Reeves, brought to St. Mary's by the National School Assemblies, showed a movie entitled "Na ture in Your Backyard." The movie provided information about Insects and smaller ani mals foilnd in the garden, ftceves also showed his pet tarantula, boa constrictor, and python. The Student Council spon sored a clean-up project Fri day, Nov. 30. All students of St. Mary s were urged to help make the project a success and as extra incentive, hot chocolate and doughnuts were provided. The area covered during t he clean-up campaign was Barneburg hill and from the school to the overpass of the highway on Barncli, The project was undertaken by the school to thank all those who helped toward construc tion of the new St. Mary's High school. Crater High School Don Lacy, speech instruc tor at Crater High school, re cently went lo Long Beach, Calif., where he presented a paper orally to the Western Speech association conven tion. In his speech, entitled "Strengthening the high school speech program through Ihe community and Ihe school," Lacy's main point lay in showing how the District AC speech festival strengthens the Crater High speech program. He also was one of two nominees for Ihe high school counsellor of the Western Speech association for the 11 western stales. Clarence Miller, Crater High school science club ad visor, repot is that his group recently sold ice cream in Central Point and Gold Hill to finance a visit to the Oceanographic Research Ship operated by Oregon State university In the study of the ocean of Ihe West Coast of Ihe United Stales. Tiie sales drive was a .;uc- cess, and the club is planning its trip for the near future. The tank is in the library where everyone can watch the fish. The Jackson School Chorus is working hard on the songs that they will sing for the Christmas program. A group of Fourth Graders also are working on several songs they will sing at two separate Christmas programs, Christmas stories arc be ginning to be checked in great numbers from the library. The three third grade class es have been singing together about three times a week aft er lunch. This gives pupils practice in chorus work. The science exhibit in the hal lin the third grade wing is contributions from any room. Manyinteresting things are in this exhibit. Social Studicf unit is on transportations and commu nications. Library books are used for research on this project. Cafeteria decorations for the second six-week period have been done by the third graders. Each room was re sponsible for two weeks. The "Third Grade Curricu lum Party for Parents" is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4. An informal question and answer period with the prin cipal, Bruce Mctzgcr, will be held at 10 a.m. The Jackson School PTA will serve coffee, and between 10:25 and 11:25 a.m. will be class visitation. Basketball practice has started at Jackson with some 40 boys turning out. Intra mural play will start soon. Roosevelt School Mrs. Frances Weaver's first grade room has a little Indian village and a Pilgrim village. The tepees are made by the boys and girls and the Indians are made of wax. They have two turtles named Nip and Tuck, and two goldfish named Danny and Fanny. They have acorns and pinecones and a big shell. They call this their Miagie gar den. They have a map which shows where the boys and itn-u live. Thcv have Thanks giving decorations, and have finger paints in the back ol their room. Mrs. Georgiana Bcier's first grade room is colorful. Pupils have a smokey bear display with little smokey hear books. They have a weather wheel, with all the days of the week on it. They keep their own calendar and they change it every month. They have a phonic peg board and it has some phonics on it. For Thanksgiving they had a bulletin board. They have a small library and Ihey have reading groups. Peppy-Peppers who read the fastest. Zippy-Zippers who read med ium, and Bunnies who read slowly. The childrpn iii Mrs. Bak er's second grade class are learning how animals live .n the winter. They are learning about communities. In arith metic they are learning how to add and subtract with two digit numbers. In music they are learning half notes and whole poles. Mrs. S u z a n n e Schullz's second grade has three read ing groups and sometimes two arithmetic groups.
