velt's Supreme Court pack
ing plan in 1937.
Born in Massachusetts, lie
settled in Wyoming and
launched his political career
in 1932 as a delegate to the
Democratic National conven
tion that first nominated
Franklin Roosevelt.
He rose to chair the mili
tary appropriations subcom
mittee and had a big voice
in defense spending prior to
1953. But he once described
his principal Senate role ay
'developing the resources of
Wyoming and the West." He
was chairman of the Senate
Interior committee from 1947
to 1952 and did his best to
carry out the role.

Friday to continue his long
battle against cancer.
The 63-year-old British-born
actor was discharged from
Cedars of Lebanon hospital,
where doctors said he no
longer required the cobalt
bomb therapy treatments he
had been receiving.
However, doctors said
Laughton was still in serious
condition.

Joseph Pawsey, 54, a leading
Australian radio astronomer,
died Friday. Pawsey was
about to assume the post of
director of the National Radio
and Astronomy Laboratory at
Green Bank, W. Va.

The two schools, which are
of similar campus-type con
struction, opened their doors
to students for the first time
this fall. They are part of a
county school construction
program financed by a bond
issue in excess of $1,600,000.
