OREGON Science Writer to Be on OU Campus Eugene One ol the fore most authorities in the field of science writing will be the first in a series of visiting lec turers to appear at the Uni-, versify of Oregon's school of Journalism as part of its gold en anniversary observance. Hillicr Krieghbaum, chair man of the department of journalism at New York uni versity, and a former member of the UO school of journalism faculty, will be on the univer sity campus Dec. 4-6. During the first two days of his visit, Krieghbaum will be addressing classes, and sit timt in on seminars. On Dec. 6. an assembly is planned in which Krieghbaum will elaborate on science writ Ins His talk will be held In the Erb Memorial Student Un ion and is open to all inter ested persons. Krieghbaum has recently returned from "".bile where he attended the first Internation al Science Writing conference. (UPI) Marine Fuel Taxes May Finance Boat Facilities in State Measures that would use unrefunded marine fuel taxes to finance the expansion of recreational boating facilities, including launching ramps, moorages and channel devel opments, will be submitted to the li)S3 legislature by the state marine board. Drafts of two bills were made public Wednesday In Medford by Marine Board Di rector Robert F. Rittenhuuse, Salem, at the close of a meet ing attended by some 25 local boating enthusiasts. Would Mak. Loam The proposals have already received the endorsement of a number of organizations in cluding the Association of Oregon Counties, rtitlcnhnusc said. Both measures would au thorize the Marine board to make loans or grants to state agencies, counties and public corporations to aid in con struction and development of boating facilities. One bill calls for all the marine fuel taxes, except those refunded to the few boaters who request them, to be used for this purpose. The other, an alternate, would pro vide the Marine board with 525,000 monthly from the taxes collected and credited Ho a boat facility-building ac- count. The Marine board said a previous survey pointed out that launching ramps, moor ages and other boating facili ties throughout the state al ready arc inadequate - and the problem will be com pounded by anticipated in creases in population and boat use. About $369,000 in taxes were paid on gasoline used in pleasure boats during 1960 and, presumably, $300,000 of this would be available for public boating facilities if the proposed legislation is approved. Children Perish In Portland Fire Portland -IUPH- Two small children died Thursday after- Virus Infection Problem Solved by Heating Tree Corvallis Putting a fruit tree in an "oven" and "bak ing' it at an even tempera ture for several days is one way of solving the problem of virus infections which rob trees of vitality and cut down yields. This is one way of explaining the heat treatment for virus elimination described by Dr. J. A. Milbrath, Oregon State university plant pathologist, to apple and pear growers Wednesday at the Oregon State Horticultural Society's annual meeting on the OSU campus. Virus infections, which slow down tree growth and which may cut truil yields by as much as 20 per cent, have long been a problem not only to the fruit industry, but also to nurserymen producing or namental shrubs. Virus free stock is nearly Impossible to find in some varieties. Carry Latent Infection Clones, or cuttings, often carry latent infections in them which do not appear un til a susceptible plant is inocu lated. When this happens, normal appearing trees slow down in growth and reduce yields under the onslaught of the parasitic virus attack. Heat treatment "is a major breakthrough in virus studies which allow us to obtain virus free clones from varieties which have become uniformly infected with virus," he de clared. Yean of Reitarch Development of the heat remedy comes after years of research by plant pathologist which started in 1936 when it was found that virus could be made inactive by exposure of plants to high tempera tures, which also killed plant tissues. In 1941, the first plant so treated survived after 14 days of treatment. This was a major break through and refined methods, mostly perfected on straw berry plants, have now led to the current treatment. Much of the recent work has been done under a Western Region al project agreement, head quartered In California, with OSU cooperating. The heat procedure Is to expose living plants to con tinuous temperature of 99 de grees, plus or minus one de gree, for 14 or more days. The dormant buds or actively growing terminal shoots are than propagated on clean root-stocks. Virus free plants are then maintained to be come the basis for further propagation. All this takes four to five years. The heat treatment at OSU is given in specially built cab inets which provide light, hu midity and carefully controll ed temperature within a de gree of that desired.
