Fair Director Files Bankruptcy Portland -HOT- Glenn Kim brcl, a member of the board of directors of the Damascus Little World's Fair, Wednes day filed a bankruptcy peti tion in federal court here. Kimbrel, a millwright from Boring, reported assets of $5, 116 and debts of $88,788. A number of the debts were in connection with the ill fated spoof of the Seattle World's Fair, which opened in a down pour and drew only 150,000 curiosity seekers during the summer. Washington -OIPD- Steuart Pittman, federal civil defense chief, says the Cuban crisis showed the Americar people will not panic under threat of atomic attack. He also said reaction of civil defense authorities to the Cuban missile threat dem onstrated that this country can quickly mobilize radia tion protection for up to 60 per cent of its people. "I think this country been greatly strengthened the Cuban experience," 1 man said. "We have learned that pr -pie don't panic unHer th s kind of threat. Pittman also said there w s "extraordinary" civil defenre action by all SO state gov ernors, who met with mayors and cooperated with the fed eral government to accelerate preparations against missile -ttack. Distribution of civil defense information has increased by "well up in the millions since the Cuban crisis," he said. Pittman said that when the threat of missiles in Cuba was at its hottest the week of Oct. 21 it would have taken civil defense authorities only a few days to get up protection from atomic radiation for 110 to 120 million persons. Pittman said such protec tion would have consisted of shelter areas in existing build ings in urban areas. He said the . locations of such build ings are l.nown by local au thorities and could have been made known to the public "on very short notice." It is also estimated that 11 to 12 million people In rural areas can be sheltered in mines and caves, he - id. To Bring Own Provisions The civil defense chief ad vised that citizens can help prepare for such an emergen cy by keeping at least two weeks supply of food on hand. They will have to "bring their own provisions into the shel ter areas and they should have enough to bring what ever they can carry," Pittman said. He said food in homes, warehouses and stores prob ably will have to carry the nation through the first week or so after an atomic attack until the government can get stored emergency surpluses moving. Pittman discounted the fu tility some people feel about surviving to live in a world that has experienced atomic warfare. "Our ancestors came to this country and faced a very hos tile world, probably much worse than the post-attack world we arc talking about, and when we get right down to this our instinct is going to be to survive," Pittman said.
