Singing Sisters Together After Separation of Years Ashland Back in Indiana many years ago the three Stowe sisters and their moth er sang together. They sang lor churches, they sang at picnics, they sang just for the love of it. Eventually the quartet was broken up by death and distance and mar riage so that the Stowe Sisters of Elkart no longer entertain ed at community and family gatherings. Alcohol Educator To Talk for PTA Thursday Night Central Point-Mrs. R. H. Walter, alcohol education con sultant of the Oregon State Board of Control will be the speaker at a meeting of Jewctt Par.nt-Teacher association Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 at the school. Her topic will be "What About Alcohol Education?" Mrs. Donald A. Faber, presi dent, conducted a recent ex ecutive m eting. M r s, Warren Holbrook, membership chairman, an nounced the winners of the contest held betwe.. the dif ferent rooms. Mrs. Wingfield's room won at the Jewett school. Mrs. Laird's room was the winner at the Central Point Elementary school, and in the Junior High school Mrs. Broomfield's room was the winner. The total mem bership of the P. T. A. is 580. Mrs. Rinehold Boos, wel fare chairman, reported on needs of the committee. William Brewster, Jewett principal, announced the com pletion and success of the first parent teacher confer ences held in this area. There was 95 per cent of the parents participating in the confer ence. Mr. McCoy reported over 200 visitors during edu cation week. Refreshments for the next meeting will be served by mothers of students i n the fifth and sixth grades. College Students Return to School Applegate Valley students who have returned to colleges after spending Thanksgiving at their homes here are Miss Joyce Hawkins, enrolled in nurses' training at Good Sa maritan hospital in Portland; Gary Fosen. from the Univer sity of Oregon and Linnie Sample from Oregon State university. Students attending colleges In Southern Oregon who also spent the holiday here with Ihcir parents were Jerry Winningham, Ashland; and William Dahl. Klamath Falls. Cancel Dance Derby The dance schedul ed by Derby Hoedowners for Saturday, December 1 has been cancelled because of previous commitment for the hall. The next regular session will be Saturday, December 15 at Derby Community hall. The trio was united at last and together they reached Ashland. For many weeks the Stowe sisters have been singing in southern Oregon. They ap peared at the Hoosier picnic, they have sung in Medford and Ashland churches and 3t weddings. This week they are leaving for southern Califor nia where they are booked for several religious programs at which Mrs. Abbott will also preach. At the conclusion of their engagements Mr. Helb ling will return to her home in Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Russell will go east back home in Indiana. Open Hoedown Is Scheduled; Classes Open Because of the demand for the open hoedown type square dances, such a session will.be held Saturday, Decem ber 1 begining at 8:30 p.m., in the Country Square hall, one mile west of Talent on Colver road, those in charge have an nounced. The open hoedown is a square dance where dancers from all clubs dance together without any club as sponsor, it was explained. Two callers will be featur ed, Byron (Buzz) Dibble and Floyd Wor'-man. Guest call ers and square dancers are in vited. Women are to take cookies or cake for refreshments. Classes for beginner square dancers will be open for new members beginning Monday, December 3 from 8 to 10 p.m. Instructor is Floyd Workman. Classes are sponsored by the Buckles and Bows club and the sessions are held in the Country Square hall. Monday evening will be the last class open for new dancers, those in charge stressed. Eureka Family Visits in Wonder Wonder Mrs. Michael Fielding and daughters, the Misses Tricia and Katherine Fielding, Eureka, Calif., have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobs. Mrs. Fielding is Mrs. Jacobs' mother. Michael Fielding Jr., and his wife and sons, Mark and Michael III, were also guests of the Jacob sons Thanksgiving. Sorority Chapter Announce Party A dessert card party will be held Saturday, December 1 by Xi Mu chapter, Beta Sigma Phi. The event is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Girls community club and is open to the public. Reservations may be made by calling Mrs. Harold Ames, 773-4173, or Mrs. Ted Gcrow, 772-4981. Mrs. Cecil Davis, chairman, anounces that both bridge and pinochle will be played. Richeys Return From Honolulu Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hichry, 28 Ross court, have returned home following a vacation In Honolulu, Hawaii. They mo tored to Portland and flew by jet clipper from there. The couple registered at the Hawaiianna hotel and took tours to homes and gardens of the area. The pal lery owners, Robert Onstad and his wife, Betty, have an espresso machine and can brew up 20 variations of the drink. They buy specially roasted beans in San Francisco, paying about twice the price per pound that coffee sells for in Rogue valley markets; the variations are contrived with milk, spices, whipped cream and other ingredients.- Tea is also made at the gallery, and both brews are served in hand made pottery cups. Gardeners Plant Trees in Park Prospect Work on the city park is being continued by members of Prospect Garden club. At a recent session, the women planted a sequoia, a black pine, a scotch pine and two weeping spruce. They also have a tamarack and a juni per, doated by Mrs. Clarence Hedgepath. When the park is complet ed, it will contain many trees not native to this locality. Between work periods at the park, the women had luncheon and a business meet ing at th home of Mrs. Earl Millard. Plans were made for a Christmas party December 14 in the Community hall. Houseguests Ashland Recent house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton J. They visited with Mrs. Ma son's nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ducketl and family. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Linden of Shady Cove have been Mr. and Mrs. A, T. Tomer, Nampa, Idaho. Pat Meyer, freshman at the University of Oregon, spent the vacation holiday with his family, the C. F. Meyers, Shady Cove. He brought with him, Tod Jensen, San Rafael, Calif., also a student at the university. Another University of Ore gon student, Miss Linda Lev ering, spent the Thanksgiving holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gird Levering of the Royal Coachman hotel, Shady Cove. Escorted and intro d u c e d were Honored Queens Sandra Beasley, Central Point 38, and Camille Eri, Medford 69; sev eral past queens, including Miss Nancy Kelly, Coos Bay; several princesses of valley bethels; Karen Edgar, Coos Bay, representative to Mani toba; and Queen Marcia, rep resentative to Oklahoma; Mrs. John North, fourth messenger of the grand guardian council in Oregon; and a large num ber of other dignitaries. Three types of presentations were made. Proficiency cer tificates went to Tandy Bed ingfield and Susan Wilson; honorary member certificates went to the new majority members and honor certifi cates were presented to Mrs. Burnie, Mrs. John Dunlap, charter guardian and Allen Rodgcrs, charter associate guardian. An addendum was given in Mrs. Burnie's honor, and she was given a gold charm for her Jobie bracelet. Bethel 69 members won an inter-bethel contest. Gardening Topic For Yreka Clubs; Project Planned Yreka "Gardening With out Work" was the topic of the program presented to both the afternoon and evening Garden Clubs In Yreka, by Mrs. Ray Penney November 12. The material used by Mrs. Penney was taken from a book by Mrs. Ruth Stout in which she advocates the use of a mulch eight inches deep on flowers and vegetables to pre vent the growth of weeds around the plants, conserve moisture and to provide fer i t,i,z(.r g5 the mulch decays. Listed as good mulching materials were spoiled hay, de- rayed vegetables, leaves, pine needles, garbage and grass clippings. Mrs. L, B. Waters, vice president, presided at the af ternoon session held in the VFW hall. Mrs. Wallace Turre's home on Blake street was the meet ing place for the evening sec tion, and Mrs. Vergil Nelson, chairman, presided. A discussion was held re garding the decorating of the hospital in which both after noon and evening groups will participate this year, it was decided to decorate the even ing of December 10 and fol lowing the work, a party is to be held at the home of Mis. Mrs. Harold Coat ney, president, states that the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Club room, Montague. Sewing meetings held each Tuesday as well as many hours of home work by the members have produced num erous interesting items. In cluded are plain and fancy aprons, always a top seller, a novelty table where there will be stuffed toys, small household items, a plant table, dish towels and linens, home baked and cooked goods, a table of home-made candy which will be sold by the piece, bag or box. A home-cooked chicken pie luncheon will be served; a variety of salads, dessert and beverages will complete the lunch.
