A-l Playoff
Tussle Here
Tonight
Football season at the Mod-
64 1 ford High school stadium
77 1 closes out tonight with a ti
80 j tanic struggle between two
. unbeaten teams,
j The Medford Black Tornado
43 and the Oregon City Pioneers
are opponents in an Oregon
Class A-l semifinal conflict.
Opening kick is billed for
8 p.m.
At stake is a berth in next
week end's championship
finale in Portland's Multno
mah stadium. The other fin
alist will be either North
Salem or Jefferson of Port
land. They are foes also to
night on a Salem field.
Oregon City seeks to add
further brilliance to a rags-to-riches
season. The Pioneers
of. 1961 did not win a game..
This season's 10-tilt record
is marred only by a lie. Now.
Oregon City, champion of the
Tualatin - Yamhill Valley
league, is a gridiron semi
finalist for the first time in
the history of the school.
Medford, missing from state
playoff only once since 195H,
is a semifinalist for the fifth
time in seven seasons. The
Black Tornado is bidding for
state titular laurels after last
wearing the crown in 1959.
Tussle In Sand
Tornado griddcrs go on the
field as favorites as the state's
No. 1 rated team in all polls.
Oregon City also was amoni!
the rated. Pollsters ranked th.;
Pioneers ninth. But the Dis
trict 4 team likely is paying
little heed to ratings. Coach
Tom Keele has informed a
Portland writer that his Big
Red was not going south for
the climate. He has said he
feels his Pioneers capable ot
playing in any league.
The game tonight may go
down in history as "the tussle
in the sand." Mud was scraped
from the center of the field
from hash mark to hash mark
this week and replaced with
sand in effort to provide bet
ter footing for the fray. Plas
tic covers then were spread.
Medford Head Coach Fred
Spiegelberg remarked, "The
field is untried. It will be
strange footing for both
teams.
Medford station of the
weather bureau forecasts fair
and cool weather at game time
tonight.
Mcdford's Bih fwistcr will
battle with its well-rounded
multiple offense. Oregon City
will retaliate with a win T
attack. Generals for the Black
Tornado are Dan Miles and
Mike Neathamer, both pa.ing
and running threats. They op
erate with Jack Lowrry,
Frank Van Pelt. Mike Wat
kins. Mike Barnes. Tim Mur
ray and Greg Gandee as oilier
rushers. Lloyd Mammons.
Lowery. Barnes and Gibb
Mitchel
are main targets in
the aerial gain
The Pioneers have Tim
Jones at quarterback with
Dave Bass. Ted Clinton and
Denny Weiler as other run
ning backs. At the ends are
6-4 Rick Seckne and Gary
Estes.
Defensive Might
Both clubs have defensive
might, with Medford showing
the top reeord amoiiR the
state's bin schools and Ore
gon City right close. The Tor
nado, unscored upon in its
first seven games this fall, has
allowed but two touchdowns
one in each of ils last two
games. The last five team;-
the Pioneers have faced, plus
one other adversary, failed to
cross the Oregon City goal. !
Six touchdowns were scored
among four foes.
1 The Pioneers this fall have j
defeated Dallas 56 to 0. Forrsl
j Grove 14 to 7. St. Helens 21

West Linn 16 to 0. Ncwbcrg j
46 to 0. Lake Oswego 27 tn
0. Tillamook 13 to 0 and
Jesuit 7 to 0. They tied Tisard

final rival.
Medford has won from The
Dalles and Marshficld each
27 to 0. South Salem 20 to II.
C'rater 7 to 0. Klamath Fall:.
13 to 0, La Grande 42 to 0.
' Ashland 48 to 0. Grants Pass
14 to 6 and Roscburg 14 to 7.
The Pioneers will have the
weight edge on the line and J
Medford among the hacks
There are three starters over

Titans Tip
Denver Club
United Press International
The Boston Patriots, still
involved in a tight race for
the championship of the East
ern Division, are four-point
favorites to down the Buffalo
Bills in their American Foot
ball league clash tonight.
In Sunday's games, Houston
(7-3), which paces the divi
sion, plays the San Diego
Chargers (3-7) at Houston and
Dallas (8-2) entertains Oak
land (0-10). The San Diego
Houston Oiler game will be
televised (ABC) nationally.
Dallas is a 20-point favo
rite and Houston is a '13-point
favorite.
Boston 6-3-1. handicapped
by the loss of quarterback
Babe Parilll for the remain
der of the season, needs a
victory over Buffalo to keep
on Houston's trail.
The Western Division was
virtually decided before a na
tional television audience on
Thursday, when the New
York Titans (5-6) edged the
Denver Broncos (7-5) at Den
ver, 46-45. Dallas can clinch
at least a tie for the title by
defeating Oakland on Sunday.
It was a bitter windup of
the home season for the Bron
cos, who were in strong con
tention for the Western divi
sion honors until dropping
four of their last five games,
including four straight before
the home fans. Denver plays
its remaining two games at
Houston and Dallas.

Lions Burst Bubble of Green Bay
By CLARK HALLAS
Dctroit-illPli-The bubble of

by the mighty Green Bay
Packers finally has burst. Bui
don't count Vince Lombardi's

If, as Lombardi suggests,
their 26-14 defeat at the hands
of the Detroit Lions Thursday
was good medicine, they could

"But I think this loss will
make us a better team. We're

in this league is not to win
them all, but to finish first."
The Packers, riding an 18
game winning streak that in
cluded six exhibitions, hoped
to clinch a share of their third
straight Western Division title
before an overflow Tiger
Stadium crowd of 57,500
second largest Detroit foot
ball throng in history. It was
not that easy, and the defense
minded Lions still feel it is
possible to creep in through
the back door.
The defeat left the Packers
with a 10-1 record and only
three games left two with
the Los Angeles Rams and one
with the San Francisco Forty
Niners. The Lions are (9-2)
and must meet the Baltimore
Colts, Chicago Bears and Min
