Tho litninr rlass held a SOC hop recently. It lasted from 7:30 to 11 p.m. The decora, linns committee had the Eng lish room decorated with enpks ham-inn from the cur tains. Music was furnished by the Rhythm Mukers. About half of the student ooay turned out. The sophomore class has ended its macazinc drive, tor two-and-a-half weeks class members sold magazine sub scriptions. The drive was termed a great success. Poodles were awarded to the first seven students who sold special subscriptions. Jackson School By Chri.tin. Bell. Marilyn Zimmeri. and Kar.n Trefran The annual Thanksgiving dinner prepared by Mrs. Dar ley Carig, Mrs. Hazel Jeffries, Mrs. Maudie Miller, and Mrs. Ruth Natwick was served to all the students and teachers at Jackson school Tuesday, Nov. 20. Many Interested parents at tended open house. William Ruck, from Medford High and chairman of the Oregon Pro gram in Medford, and our principal, Bruce Metzger, gave an interesting and factual re port on the Oregon Program. Both speakers worked for two weeks at the state department in Salem this summer, and al so attended the two weeks orientation program in Con ncclicut and Massachusetts. The SRA reading program is well established. This type of work Is only one phase of the Medford public school reading program. Volcanos, lug houses, and pioneer forts are a few of the projects made by the students in correlation with the social study classes. A phonograph equipped with four sets of car phones has been added to the library. This provides a means of en joying music or listening to arithmetic records and stories as each individual student wishes to enrich his informa tional background. Tapes that have been prepared on the tape recorder can be used on this equipment too. Wilson School In Mr9. Freda Peterson's fourth gradp art class, the students made unusual draw ings by closing their eyes, drawing a free form design, then filled it in using at least five different colors at least three different times. The finished pictures resemble a mosiac, have beautiful color combinations and were view ed by the parents at open house. David Hcatherly is a new student from Ft. Carson, Colo. In science, the students are studying compressed air. In Mrs. Dorothy Morris' fourth grade room, the cur rent project in social studies has been a study of the Pa cific Northwest Indians. Arti facts have been brought by the students; maps, and a small scale Indian village has helped the children to under stand the important part of the country's history. Room officers for this six weeks are president, Dale Howell; vice president, Jac queline Endicott; secretary. Randy Cohen; room repre sentative, Larry Farris. New students are Sandra Baker from Drain, Ore. and Jo Ann Jones who transferred from Jackson school. Billie Sue Felkner has moved to Eugene. In Russell Carr's fifth grade room, students in sci ence are studying the machine in its simple form as illus trated by the steam turbine, the crane and the pulley. Sharon Willoughby moved to Eureka, Calif., and a new student is Odean Jones who transferred from Jackson school. Wilson school won its foot ball game with Jefferson 6 to 0. The season ended with two wins, two losses and one tie. Basketball will be com ing up with the first practice to come the Monday following Thanksgiving. In Mrs. Barbara Doolen's fifth grade room, the students have made still-life drawings from a table setting of a Thanksgiving Fruit Harvest. The combined chorus led by Mrs. Doolen entertained the parents and faculty at the open house recently. The chorus is now studying Christ mas music. A new student from Jack son school is Benson Neather-ton. In Mrs. Ruth Kaye's sixth grade room. Judv Hedbers and Greg Jones served tor tillas and enchiladas to the class when they made a re port on Mexican food. The students are preparing and illustrating written re ports on such topics as the Banana Industry in the Cen tral Americas and the Panama Canal and the Mayas and coffee. Colorful book markers were given to the students by the International Paper company for National Book Week. The slogan of the company is "Send me a man who reads!" In Vern Goodrich's sixth grade, Ruben Brenhaug was selected to assist Robert Smith at the first of the National Assemblies. Mr. Smith is mas ter of "Balloonerama" as he makes fascinating toys and animals from simple balloons. Berry Leach has transfer red to Howard school. Mrs. Virginia Wicker noted that the Thanksgiving menu I for the students was turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuff ed celery, cranberry sauce, hot rolls, green beans, ice cream and cookies. Wilson school is unique in that it has its own private walnut trees. A light harvest was collected this year be cause of the storm Oct. 12, but the nuts are gathered, they are drying in the fur nace room and according to Robert Baccus, principal, they will soon become the ingredi ents for cakes, cookies and icings to be consumed by the entire Wilson school. The home room mother's were in charge of the parties. Mrs. Reese (Edith) Braley attended our UN Program. Mrs. Braley spoke to us on the need of the UN and the part children could do. UNI CEF is an important part of the UN. The Jackson school student treasurer, Jimmy Mor risey, presented Mrs. Braley with a check to be used for UNICEF. Donald Sample, student body president, introduced Robert Kramer, sixth grade teacher, who had charge of the UN program. Several extra activities were done for National Book Week. David White and Eliza beth Rodgers gave book re views on radio station KMED recently. Christine Bell, Marilyn Zlmmers, Gary Ogier, Cheryl Kouts, Miss Eunice Gray and Bruce Metzger were on a KMED - TV program. The panel discussed "W hat a school library can do for students." All fourth, fifth and sixth giiiclc students visited Jack son county's public library Wednesday. Dr. Arthur Taylor explained the origin a n d meaning of many of the names of (owns, cities, rivers, used in Oregon to the sixth grade class. Mrs. Harriet Tnhin gave a review of Argentina and its progress Thursday, and Mrs. Kirkland West gave a report on China to the fifth Kracto class Friday.
