NOVEMBER 19. 19B1 B 7 Chandler's Toe On Top; Green By NORMAN MILLER UPI Sporti Writer Neither rain, jnow nor mud could prevent Don Chandler of the New York Giants from the swift completion of his place-kicking rounds, but the Green Bay Packers might have missed delivering the mail if not for two of their young carriers. Chandler kicked four field goals in wretched weather conditions to keep the Giants atop the Eastern division of the National Football league with a 19-14 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Green Bay Packers played in much better wea ther but had all kinds of trouble before rallying to beat the Baltimore Colts, 17-13, for their 10th straight victory. They were outgained and out played but kept their 1962 record spotless with the help of a 103-yard kickoff return by Herb Adderley and a game-winning 23-yard touch down run by Tom Moore. Both the Packers and the Giants face an opportunity this week to break the divis ion races wide open and set ' up a return meeting in the championship playoff Dec. 30. Green Bay meets the Detroit Lions, Thanksgiving Day, while New York plays the Washington Redskins next Sunday. There was plenty of foot in football Sunday as three of the NFL's seven games were decided by field goals. Besides North Salem, Jeff Semifinal Rivals United Preti International North Salem plays host to Jefferson and Oregon City is at Medford in Oregon high school Class A-l semifinal playoff football games next week end. In Class A-2 semifinal con tests, Toledo is at Seaside and Central is at Phoenix next week end. Corbett and Monroe battle at Portland and Union is at Merrill in the Class B-ll semi finals and Canyonville is at Hereford for the Class B-8 championship next week end. Don't Miss This BIG Game! The Lions remained two games behind the Packers in the Western Division by rally ing in the last half for a 17-6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings; the San Francisco Forty Niners defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 24-17, and the Cleveland Browns drubbed the St. Louis Cardinals, 38-14. Green Bay, playing without Paul Horning and linebacker Dan Currie, was outgained by the Colts, 380 yards to 116. Johnny Unitas' passes gained 237 yards for the Colts and the Baltimore defense held Green Bay fullback Jim Tay lor in check for the second time this season. Taylor, the league's leading rusher, gained only 46 yards in 19 carries. Two field goals by Dick Bielski and Unitas' 34-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Orr put the Colts ahead, 13-10, after Lema Captures Mobile Sertoma Mobile, Ala. (UPD With only four bogeys in four rounds of almost flawless play, Tony Lemi headed to wards the Orando, Fla., Open today $2,000 richer after tak ing the Mobile Sertoma tour nament by seven shots. By winning their 12th straight game dating back to last season, the Packers tied the club record set by their 1928-29 predecessors. The Giants also had trouble Perfect Record List Cut to 17 New York - (UPI) - The na tion's perfect-record list of college football teams dwin dled to just 17 during the week end when Alabama, Hofstra, California Poly of Pomona, and East Strouds burg were beaten Saturday. Southern California, the na tion's No. 1 team in the United Press International Board of Coaches ratings, third-ranked Mississippi and Dartmouth were the only ma jor schools left on the list. Alabama, the No. 2 team, was knocked off by virtue of a 7-6 loss to Georgia Tech. Hofstra, the top small col lege team in the East, bowed out following a 16-12 loss to Wittenberg, which now has won nine straight without de feat. Slippery Rock knocked East Stroudsburg off the list, 13-6. Only five of the 16 perfect record teams have not com pleted their season. Emporia College of Kansas and Cen tral Oklahoma, ranked third in the UPI small college ratings, lead the list with 10 victories each. Kick-off is set for noon. Whitworth and Southern Oregon are champs, respectively, of the Evergreen and Oregon Collegiate conferences. Stephan is said to throw the long ball well and to run the option like a veteran. He mixes offensive patterns well. Reserved seat tickets went on sale today at Mann's Department store in Medford, Central Point pharmacy and Southern Oregon college in Ashland. Herb Partridge, game chairman for the co-soponsoring Med ford Kiwanis club, reported on reserve. Season ticket holders to Crater high games have been given until Tuesday noon to buy their same seats. Those not called for by that time will go on regular sale. Since the Crater grandstand holds approximately 2,000 spectators, there will be around 1,000 general admission seats under cover. General admission tickets can be obtained from Kiwanians or from Southern Oregon college. There are special high school and grade school prices. SOC students will be admitted by their student body cards. Baker Gains Leadership In Offense Corvallis - IUPII - The ereat Terry Baker was the nation's total offense leader and sec ond all-time ground gainer in the history of college football today. Baker exploded for 389 yards in the rain Saturday to lead OreRon Slate to a 25 14 victory over stubborn Col orado State. Baker took over first place in the national total offense race with 2,144 yards in nine games as the Beavers posled their seventh win of the sea son against two losses. He became the second high est ground gainer behind Johnny Bright of Drake with 4,847 yards. Bright rolled up 5,903 from 1949-1951. Oregon State, now 7-2 and hopeful of a post season bowl invitation, scored on runs of one and 28 yards by fullback Bruce Williams, a 42-yard screen pass play from Baker to halfback Leroy Whittle and a six-yard run by Baker. Baker To Burkt Baker completed 18 of 29 passattempts for 226 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 163 yards. End Vein Burke caught 10 passes for 108 yards for the Beavers to break the NCAA pass receiving record for one season. He shattered Ihe rec ord with 972 yards in nine games. The record was held by Washington Stale end Hugh Campbell of 881 set in I960. Burke also tied Camp bells mark of 66 catches in one season. Colorado Stale Coach Mike Lude, whose Rams suffered a deleat which extended the nation's longest losing streak among major colleges lo 25, joined a long lisl of opposing coaches who have hailed Baker. "He's easily Ihe best ball player we've seen this year," he said. Oregon Stale Coach Tommy Prothro, whose Beavers play host to Oregon here next Sat urday, was unhappy with his team's performance. "I wish we had played hel ler," he said. "It's all right to have one supposedly easy game but two in a row is bad. We're now a sloppy football team and we weren't two weeks ago." Santa Ana, which com pleted its season with a per fect 9-0 record, was named as the western choice Sunday. It will be the Dons' first trip to the junior bowl since 1949 when they lost to Little Rock, Ark., 25-19. Houston Regains AFL Eastern Lead Br JOE SARGIS UPI Sports Writer It was a day of breaks in Ihe American Football league Sunday a lucky break for the Houston Oilers, a bad break for the Boston Patriotf and a breakaway by the Dal las Texans. The Oilers look over first place in the Eastern division by beating the Patriots, 21-17, in a brawling game. The de feat was costly for Boston, which lost quarterback Babe Parilli for the season because of a broken collarbone. The Texans pulled two games ahead in the Western division by trouncing their closest rivals, the Denver Broncos, 24-3. In Sunday's only other game, the Buffalo Bills sent Ihe Oakland Raiders down to their 16th straight defeat. 10-6. New York and San Diego were idle. By winning, Houston re gained the division lead with a 7-3 record compared with 6-3-1 for Boston. But the loss of Parilli by the Patriots made it unlikely they can overtake the Oilers during the final four games of the sea son. Hostilities Hostility broke out not long after Parilli was injured in the first half. Jesse Richard son and Jack Rudolph of Bos ton's defensive unit were ejected from the game for their part in the fisticuffs. George Blanda threw first- half scoring passes of 25 yards to Charlie Hcnnigan and 42 yards to Bob McLeod, and the Oilers' defense held Boston in check after that de spile five intercepted passes. Houston fullback Charlie To- lar caught four passes and bucked over for the Oilers' last touchdown. Tom Yewcic, who replaced Parilli, hit Ron Burton wilh a 69 -yard touchdown pass for Boston's final score before a crowd of 35,250 at Houston.
