R. - We must set a ceiling on the annual cost ol her clothing. Bonnia R. - That's impossi ble. I can't tell in advance what I'll need. Mri. P. R. - We have a 16-year-old daughter who's just mad over clothes. She's slim and graceful and, of course, everything looks well on her. And she tries to keep up with the college girls she meets at parties, as well as with her high school bunch, in appear ing with "the newest thing." So life at home has become a battle between Bonnie and our pockctbook. To keep her feet on the ground we've decided to give her a flat sum as a clothing allowance to tide her over a full year. In view of the fact that she has a new winter coat and a new suit, we've set the figure at S200. In addition she gets a $5-a-wcck allow ance, and aftcn doubles that with baby-silting. This should certainly keep her in both necessities and "nonsense." Bonnie R. - First my par ents remind me that I'm still a child and need direction. Then they decide I'm old enough to take charge of pur chasing hundreds of dollars worth of clothes. Well, I don't agree. There are some things a teen-age girl can use help with, and her wardrobe is one of them. It's been hard enough mak ing wise purchases, even with out the clothes-budget idea. 1 always try to economize, look for markdowns and sales. But many times I get gypped, bring something home that's defective or useless, and never wear it. I'm willing to com promise. If my parents will continue to pay my clothing bills as they arise, I'll leave it to my mother to make the final decisions on what I real ly need. I may kick, but I'll give in. Th Council: No. Bonnie. One budget is worth a hun dred blowups. Even though you promise to "give In" more readily, resist the Bikinis, take back the platinum wig you'll still argue wilh your mother. And her excelleivl idea is that you argue with yourself and the budget, not with her and your dud. Any dollar-aud-eenls dis agreements which can be set tled by simple arithmetic save a lot of wasted emotion. Mrs. R.'s proposal is aimed at just that. She and Bonnie can use r their emotional energy for other probleris-the kind that don't settle into neat Income and Outgo columns. Bonnie's the sly uni', in deed, to be pleading youth and helplessness now. Behind her bid for Mom will weaken when the allowance is used up and pad it quietly. Fated with two dream dresses and other irresistibles. Mom won't make her choose. "Take both," she may possibly say. Introducing a debt limit on clothing expenditures not only saves money, but teaches Bon nie many useful tactics. For instance, she learns I" pon der, wait and weigh each pur chase carefully. If 1 want thai red velvet raincoat, she'll ak herself, can 1 atfnrd purple Bermudas'.' Or should 1 make do with last years green slacks, shorten them, perhaps'.' There'll be less impulse lui ing, less ollow-llie-leader in aping of girls' ge tups. The amount sounds okay. Mrs. R. is not deserting Min nie. She'll still lie on lap to advise, warn, question. She'll still ofter what every teen ager loves-an argument. Bon nie will still be able to "kick" against her mother's reason ing. But the final decisions w ill have to he her own. This ploy should accom plish what Mrs H wishes keep Bonnie s (eel on the ground, even Ihouuh they're encased in outlandish pint form shoes she's having fun with.
