four large tanks of potentially
deadly chlorine gas was raised
from the bottom of the Mis
sissippi river Monday and re
lieved townspeople settled
back to "normal living."
Elaborate civil defense
preparations had been made
for the emergency evacuation
of about 80,000 residents with
in a 30-milc area in the event
the cholorine leaked from the
tanks and became gas on con
tart with air.
The tanks were aboard a
barge which sank 19 months
ago. Salvage operations were
ordered by the federal govern
ment for fear the 75-foot tanks
might rust and leak. The first
tank was lifted from the
sunken barge on Oct. 24.
The tanks were taken down
river to the Wyandolt Chem
ical Co., at Ceiemar, La., and
the chlorine was transferred
to storage tanks. The barge
was not touched because au
thorities did not consider it a
hazard.

He was awakened by a steady
gnawing sound.
He opened his eyes and saw
a porcupine nibbling at the
hHndles of the boat oars. The
animal was perfectly willing
to chew up the boat oars for
what Utile salt they contained
from the perspiration from
Ihe man's hands.
Just Blinked
When noise or violent ges
ture failed to slop the chew
ing, the man grabbed the oth
er end of the oar and yanked
it away from porky. The ani
mal simply blinked his eyes;
he showed no hostility or fear.
The skunk depends on Hs
scent glands for protection-,
the porcupine depends on its
ciuills. An adult porcupine has
quills in fantastic number;
they are about as thick as hair
on a dug, numbering at times
in Ihe thousands. The quills
are mixed in with stiff, silvery
hair, and like Ihe hair, lie flat
on Ihe body.
