Yii sociated with W .-.frit rheum atnid arthritis. No one knows what the cause is; sometimes the only sure way of making a diagnosis is to perform what biopsy, it Alvarez Is known as which a little piece of tissue is cut out, sectioned, stained, and examined under a micro scope. In a recent article. Dr. Roger L. Black of the Nation al Institute of Health in Be thesda, Md., says that the term polyarteritis nodosa de signates a variety of clinical states related to one another by a common factor, which is an inflammation of the blood vessels, with death of tissue In parts of the blood vessel wall here and there. There are four theories as to the production of the dis ease: (1) infection, (2) sensi tivity to some drug, (3) sensi tization to some germ, and (4) high blood pressure. As yet, no one is sure of any one bacterial or viral agent as the cause of the disease. In certain sensitive persons, the giving of sulfonamides (an antibiotic series of drugs) can produce a disease that re sembles polyarteritis. The disease may occur i-.t any age. It is seen more often In men. The early smptoms can be fever, physical discom fort, pain in the muscles, and weakness. There may be ab dominal pain with nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or consti pation. Occasionally the pain will imitate that of an acute appendicitis. An early finding may be a generalized neuritis, which can produce strange feelings In the skin, or numbness and loss of strength in a wrist. There may be a skin eruption or nodules in or under the skin. Some persons get per sistent ulcerations in the skin, with black and blue spots; the joints may be involved. Sometimes the disease shows up as a chronic cough and asthma, or repeated attacks of pneumonia; there may be trouble with the kidneys, to gether with high blood pres sure. Some patients have signs of injury to their central nervous system, with a brain that doesn't work well. Some have trouble with the heart. Occasionally there may be some obstruction in the nose or the sinuses. Unfortunately, as yet there Is no definite treatment known. Sometimes salicylates and aspirin, or the cortisone like drugs will help. Fortu nately, in some cases the dis ease quiets down and even disappears. If you have high blood pressure, or are worried about it, you'll want to send 25 cents and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for Dr. Al varez' booklet, "High Blood Pressure." Address Dr. Wal ter C. Health Food Racket Recently, Dr. Larrick of the Food and Drug Administra tion in Washington, and thoughtful physicians every where, have become dis turbed over the millions of dollars that are being taken out of the pockets of our peo ple by men who are pushing some supposed health food which they say is either es sential to the health of every member of a family, or will cure grandfather's arthritis. Many of the people who fall for this sales talk are living on so small an income that they really cannot afford to be gyped. They do not know that experts have tried out every diet supposed to cure arthritis, and have found that none of them will help consistently, if tested on 100 or more patients. Sometimes a doctor or layman will think that his new diet has helped, but he does not know that in many cases, spells of arthritis come and go, even when the person takes on medicine or diet. As I write this, in comes one of my patients, a widow of 65, who tells me that two months ago some company sent her a bottle of supposed food supplements which they said she must take if she hoped to "stay alive and well." Then the company scared her into sending them $3.50. Soon they sent her more pills and another bill, and later, she got more pills and a strong demand for pay ment. Fortunately, she then consulted a lawyer who said she need not pay the bills, and she need not return the medicine which he had never ordered. Unfortunately, many people who do not know the law are scared into paying. Recently, a number of the peddlers of so-called "nature foods" have been arrested oy the Food and Drug Adminis tration people. I admire ible Dr. Larrick, the head of the F.D.A., who has been going after the men who force fake drugs on people. Now, Dr. Larrick is going after the makers of those impressive-looking electric in struments that hundreds of quacks use for the purpose of making their victims think that they are getting a very scientific diagnosis. Dr. Lar rick says that any electrican can easily show that these fancy machines are of no value, and were made only to impress people with the sup posed skill of the quack.
