Denver Broncos Regain First Place in AFL West Division By MARTIN LADER UPI SporU Wrilei The Denver Broncos, who already have won as many games this year as thry did in their two previous seasons, are bock in first place in the American Football league's Western division today as they continue to turn the tables on their former tormentors. Denver took another step toward squaring accounts with the once-fearsome San Diego Chargers Sunday by beating the two-time Western Division champions, 23 - 20. The victory put the Broncos back on top in their division as the Dallas Texans lost to Houston, 14-6. The New York Titans hand ed the Oakland Raiders their eighth straight loss. 31-21, in the only other AFL game played Sunday. On Saturday night, the Eastern Division leading Boston Patriots were held to a 28-28 tie by the last place Buffalo Bills. Seventh Bronco Win Halfback Don Stone scored all three touchdowns for the Broncos, who registered their seventh victory in nine games. Last year Denver could do no better than a 3-11 record and in 1960 the Broncos won but four games. It also marked the second triumph for Denver over the Chargers this season after dropping all four contests in previous years between the clubs. Den'er was trailing. 20-14, entering the final quarter when Stone caught a 13-yard pass from quarterback Frank Tripucka for the tying touch down. Gene Mingo added the extra point to put the Broncos ahead and they gained their final two points on a safety. Stone also scored on runs of one and five yards earlier in the game. Two Quick Touchdowns San Diego quarterback John Hadl passed for two touchdowns within 27 seconds to help the Chargers to a 17-7 half time lead. One of the scor ' ing plays was a 72-yard toss to Jerry Robinson. Houston, which twice has won the AFL championship, moved to within a half game of first place Boston and at the same time avened last week's embarrassing 31-7 loss to the Texans. George Blnnda connected .with Billy Cannon for both Oiler touchdowns, one on a six-yard pass and the other on a 34-yard toss. The Texans, who were held to their lowest score ever, averted a shutout with little more than a minute to play when Chris Burford took a 1 5-yard scoring pass from Lcn Dawson. Dawson, the league's leading passer, completed 19 of 30 attempts for 208 yards but often was forced to hurry his throws and didn't do much damage against a tough Oiler defense. Oakland Remains Winless Johnny Green threw a 34 yard scoring pass to Don May nard and added the decisive touchdown himself wi.h a one-yard plunge in the final period to pave the way for the Titans' second straisht victory. Oakland, which has yet to win this season, twice led in the game but was unable to hold on against a determined New York offense. That means they'll keep every man on the club who has been rumored as trade bait: Orlando Cepeda, Harvey Kuenn, Willie McCovey, Mike McCormack and ail the rest. "That doesn't mean vc have to stand pat," says generai manager Chub Feeney. "If we were about to try and strengihen the club, then I believe we'd try for more pitching help." President Horace Stoneham isn't exactly in accord with this line of reasoning. "We had four pitchers around the 20-game winner, mark during the past season," says the club president. "So I can't see how we are weak there." Giants Wanted Art Despite claims that Cepeda never has been on the trading block, there is strong evidence that the big first baseman was used as a bit of bait as long ago as last August when he was in a terrible slump and the Giants pitching couldn't get the other side out. The Giants wanted Art Ma- haffey of the Philadelphia Phils in the worst way, and they were ready to part with Cepeda to get Mahaffcy, Trie Phils would have none of it. Stoneham and all the rest of the Giants' official family, naturally, deny this talk. But the guess is that the club must come up with some pitching help to repeat as champions. They backed into the title this year when the Los Angeles Dodgers' mound corps ran out of gas. It's hard to expect Jack Sanford to come up with another 24-7 season, although he could do it. And it's prac tically impossible to believe that the aging Billy Pierce, 35 great competitor that he is, can come back with another 16-6 record. Three Young Stars On the other hand Juan Marichal, 18-lt, has his best years ahead of him. And great things are expected of fire balling young Bob Bolin, who will be 24 ill January. Bolin was used mostly in relief roles this year while posting 7-3 record. There also is talk that Bob Garibaldi, the 19 -year -old, SI 50,000 bonus baby, may get enough experience in winter play to be a winner in the big leagues.
