I hope the people of south ern Oregon will give honor to a man who has proved, be yond a doubt, he should rep resent the 4th District of Ore gon, I have found few men so dedicated to doing a good job for the people of Oregon as Bob Duncan. His two terms as speaker of the House is a record of faith of both parties. I am sure if you send him to Congress, you will be proud of his record, and beyond this you will receive attention to your problems. I have known Bob for many years, and his family. Hatfield Challenged To the Editor: As a lawyer I was interested in Hatfield's statement o n "Viewpoint" that a number of "competent" attorneys had advised him that he could employ Loren Hicks as his private attorney at state expense and in direct violation of Oregon law. Sec. 180.220 (1) provides that the Attorney General shall have "full charge and control of all the legpl busi ness of all departments, com missions and bureaus of the state, or of any office thereof, which requires the services of an attorney or counsel." Sec. 180.220 (2) provides as follows: "No state officer, board, commission or the head of a department or in stitution of the state shall em ploy or be represented by any other counsel or attorney at Sec. 180.230 (1) stales: "No compensation shall be al lowed to any person for serv ices as an attorney or coun selor to any department of the state government or to the head thereof." This law was enacted by the legislature in 1947. In that session I served as Speaker of the House and I know the intent of the legislature was to prevent state officers from employing private lawyers at state expense. The Cuban sit uation is very much an issue in this cam paign. As this situa tion grows more ser ious, we Americans must show President Kennedy that we support a policy of firmness even if it means the setting up of a vate attorney at an annual salary in excess of $13,000 a year and which illegal salary is being paid by Oregon tax payers. Hatfield has challenged the attorney general to prosecute him. In the interest of econ omy I hope Mr. Thornton does just that. I now chal lenge Hatfield to reveal the names of these "competent" lawyers who have advised him that he can violate Ore gon law with impunity. In my opinion no lawyer worthy of this calling would render such an opinion in view of the plain and clear provis ions of the law covering the subject. John H. Hall, Ex-Governor Dodd Bldg. Newport, Ore. The Best Man To the Editor- As I see it, the most important reality of the moment, besides the ever present worry of the Commu nists and Cuba, is that an elec tion is upon us. On Tuesday we will go to the polls and - here in Oregon - elect a governor, senator and four congressmen, as well as other state, county and local offi cials. We have a special part to play here in Jackson county. Again, it is a distinct privilege to have a local man running for 4th District congressman. This man, of course, is Bob Duncan. I wonder how many voters here realize that it is a vastly important advantage to have one of our own people in Congress who has already distinguished himself with his ability to work administra tion wise, both as an adminis trator and as a co-legislator? We often have problems that can't be solved either at the local or state level. Bob Duncan, so well inform ed on the particular needs of this area, would be a tre mendous asset to us on the national level. One need only know Bob to be assured that he would quickly win the respect and friendship of his colleagues in Congress, as was exhibited in the Oregon Legis lature where he became the only speaker to be twice con secutively elected. He has al ready received recognition by the administration, being one of only three state legislators in the entire country appoint ed by the President to his Ad visory Council on Inter-governmental Relations. The opportunity we have of electing our own Bob Dun can to Congress is enhanced by our secure knowledge that he has those qualities we need in a good congressman: sound independent judgment, a fine legislative background, ma turity combined with vision, and a warm desire to under stand the ideas and problems of all the people he comes in contact with. I have often seen him actually defend the opinion of his adversaries through a sense of fair play, when he knew that their dif ference lay only in view point, not from lack of mutual de sire to serve. This has been expressed in his conduct as a lawyer as well as a true rep resentative of the people. We do not need to look any further than the bounda ries of our own county for the best Congressman we can possibly elect: Bob Duncan. "Besides giving the proper amount of concern for our children, who are the most precious of our possessions, some consideration should be given to the state of mind of our adults. All are inclined to be mentally lazy to say the very least. It is so easy to lose the personal responsibility for public welfare and satisfy conscience by voting for some alleged specialist to run affairs for us. Hitler consid ered the people Incapable of governing themselves and it didn't take long for him to acquire their cooperation in that way of thinking. '"Our legislators who passed the reorganization law were not so democratically minded as they should have been. "There has been set up a centralized administration so far removed from the elec torate that it is practically taxation without representa tion. It was a step which may be costly to undo but more costly to continue to tolerate. We have had enougn ot school buses traveling thou sands of unnecessary miles with their incalculably preci ous cargo in rain and snow and fog in order to cram these children into over crowded schoolrooms with overburdened teachers who scarcely learn the names of the pupils, many of wnom sadly need personal attention. For months many of tnese youngsters must leave home before daylight and return after dark. How well do you think you could do your home work on a swaying school bus? Your Republican Team Brainwash To the Editor: Undoubtedly, many of you readers have been totally d'fgusted with the gigantic and, in many cases, idiotic give-a-ways of our tax dollars both here ana abroad. Yet, you felt frus trated in doing anything to stop it. In the 49 other states we can do little or nothing, but here in Oregon we have the perfect opportunity to kick out ot the Senate one of the foremost spenders of our time - Wayne Morse. In recent years he has voted for these wild - eyed spending schemes almost 100 per cent of the time. Many union members are being brainwashed through COPE, by their own dues money, to vote for Morse. The union bosses and the racket eers among them have been helped to their pinnacles of power by Morse in past years and they intend to do their ut most to keep him in the Sen ate for future favors. Union members and other voters need only check the Senate voting record of Wayne Morse and see for themselves. You will be shocked at the audaci ty of this man in asking for your vote because he "will hold down taxes and con serve spending". Those who have been suffi ciently brainwashed to vote for Morse again - and should he be re-elected - can only hang their heads in shame when reading about future wasteful spending programs. M. J. I can assure you that I have never known a finer man, nor one for whom I have greater ad miration. I worked in the Jackson county sheriff's office part time during 1948 and as a full time deputy beginning in January of 1949 and until Nov. 7, 1949. During that period of time I worked di rectly under and took my in structions from "De" Leigh, who was the supervisor of the criminal department of the sheriff's office. As far as I was concerned he was my boss. I give full credit to "De" Leigh for my training, which enabled me to do my present work. "De" is one of the best in structors I have ever had and he knows how to train men and is an excellent adminis trator. I can most simply and honestly assure you that I hold no man in higher regard and I sincerely urge all re sponsible citizens of this coun ty who are desirous of re sponsible county administra tion to elect "De" sheriff on Nov. 6. We are tired of an er ratic, egotistical "lone wolf" who votes according to his principles - as they happen to be at the moment.
