Detroit 10O Los Angeles 115, New York 95 United press International There's no discounting the . fact Elgin Baylor is a great basketball player, but many individuals claim that lithe Jerry West is the man who last season turned the Los Angeles Lakers into a cham pionship team. They may have a point there. West helps take the pres sure off Baylor, who usually averages around 35 points a game. And when Elgin has a slow night, the former West Virginia university star usu ally scores enough to take ' up the slack. Wednesday night, when Baylor slipped to 28 points, .West flipped in 35 and the 63-point combination sparked .Los Angeles to an easy 115-95 ; victory over the New York Knickerbockers. The Syracuse Nationals blew a 15-point lead but came back to dump St. Louis 1 26 108 and belt the Hawks from first place in the National Basketball Association's West ern Division, while the Boston Celtics bounced back from their first defeat of the sea son to smash the winlcss De troit Pistons, 115-100. West opened at his usual guard position, but also play ed at forward when the po tent Lakers brought in Dick Barnett and Hot Rod Hundley in the second half. It was LA's second straight win at home after four consecutive road losses. Losers to the knickerbock ers at New York two weeks ago, the Lakers trailed by a point lale in the first quarter then exploded to grab a 64-44 halftime lead. Now with a 2-6 record, the Knicks were led by Johnny Green with 28 points. Syracuse remained in a first-place tic with Boston in the Eastern Division with its victory, the Nats' fourth in five games. John Kerr with 24 points and Hal Greer with 21 toppled Syracuse, while rookies Chet Walker and Len Chappell hit 17 each for the Hawks. At Detroit the Pislons-now 0-6 for the year - trailed 26 24 in the second quarter when the ageless Celtics rammed in 16 points to Detroit's six in the next five minutes. Tom Heinsohn, who led the spurt, was high for Boston with 24, while teamma.e Sam Jones scored 23. LOWE OUT FOR SEASON San Diego, Calif. -lUPP- San Diego Charger halfback Paul Lowe, a two-year all - AFL choice, was declared out for the season with a broken arm Tuesday by coach Sid Gillman. Lowe, who suffered the injury in the Chargers' second exhi bition game, had been count ed on for the last part of the season. Roger Maris Tabbed Flop of 1962 Season By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer New York IlTO Only one short year after he was the toast of baseball, New York Yankee slugger Roger Maris was tabbed the flop of the year today hy the United Press International. A UPI board of 24 baseball experts singled out Maris as the season's No. 1 disappoint ment in a close vote with the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals. Ho rose into the $70,000 clasn as a Dayton University Placed On Probation for 2 Years Dayton, Ohio - OTU - The University of Dayton says it will accept the two-year pro bation handed it Wednesday by the National Collegiate Athletic association (NCAA) without seeking a review. The University was accused of violating rules on aid to athletes and of allowing vhe 1960-61 freshman basketball team to play an excessive number of games. Dayton, which last year won the National Invitation tournament (NIT) champion ship and has three starters from that team returning this season, will be prohibited from competing in the NCAA basketball championships dur ing the probation period. The ban also extends to other invitational basketball events cooperating with the NCAA unless prior contracts already have been signed. Accepts Penally "We accept the penally im posed by the NCAA commit tee on infractions." the Very Rev. Raymond A. Roesch, uni versity president, said in a statement. "Since there has never been any question in the past about the game played by our fresh man teams, we were not aware that we were violating the code," he said. Fr. Roesch said that even before being advised by the committee, the university stu dent welfare council recom mended more than a year ago that the freshman schedule be shortened and no post-season play be scheduled. The 1962-63 schedule was shorten ed considerable, he added. The committee also charged that the university on three occasions during the college year of 1960-61 provided free transportation to a freshman basketball player so he could return home for personal rea sons and paid transportation costs from his home to the Jalopy Racing Meeting Slated Another meeting for the or ganization of a club to pro mote' "jalopy" racing on a circle track next summer near Medford will be held this eve ning at 8 o'clock at Crater High school in Central Point. , All drivers and builders of 1 this type auto are invited to participate in the rule forma tion session. Some of this work was begun at the last meeting two weeks ago and officials said the rules should be finished at tonight's ses sion.
