A check of various business leaders and economists by Fairchild News Service this week brings to view mixed feelings as to consumer buying, retail merchandising and the economy as a whole. Economist A. W Zelomek, president of International Statistical Bureau feels: "Business men will adopt a normal or slightly above normal attitude toward building inventories as a result of the Cuban crisis. Government spending is sure to increase and this will pre clude a decline in the economy that had been expected during the first quarter." Dr. Jules Backman of New York University said that as long as the Cuban crisis remained within the present context he does not see any significant impact on prices or consumer buying pat tern' He pointed out that the crisis will result in a moderate increase in government spending which will erase the "ripple' or modest downturn in the economy that wa ex pected at the year's end. He doesn't see any consumer buying binge since we are not, at thi time on an all-out war footing." On the other hand, many retailers are taking a wait-and-see attitude. In Los Angeles, merchants report they are being watchful-jut a is the man on the street-of the developments concerning Cuba. No sales effect ha been felt by retailers in Dallas- but some furnishings store heads foresee a sales drop should the situation become more acute. In Chicago. David L. Blumberg, general manager, J. Blumberg Furniture savs: "If people anticipate price rises and shoriages resulting liom the crisi business may be stimulated." Trade association men believe it likely that some consumers mav indulge initially in a measure of scare-buying. Their uu.il targets, ap parel, shoes sheets pillowcases and other stable items. This would be expected to subside auicklv as it became clear (hat such merchandise was readily available. i imii ! mil ii 111 ii iii mrffTTira MEDIUM-PRICE DODGE-Dodge today unveiled an expanded line of ir.sdium-pnce cars, increasing the number of models from six to nine. Six of the 1963 models are in me deluxe Custom 880 series and three in a new, less-expensive 880 series. Dodge otticials said the 122-inch-wheelbase line provides big-car styling, luxury and performance at a moderate price. The new 880's go on sale at Dodge dealerships including Parson Motor Company here on November 14. Pictured above is the Custom 880 four-door hardtop. FLAVORED WHIPPED CREAM CHEESE is being introduced in the Rogue River Valley by Kraft Foods. The light, whipped cream cheese is packed in four-ounce size aluminum fluted cups with easy-opening reusable covers. Seven flavors make up the Kraft line. They are. in addition to the plain whioned cream cheese: Pimento, blue cheese, chive, onion, bacon and horse radish, and herb spice. The new whipped cream cheese are ideal for sandwiches, snacks or party refresh ments. They are whipped to a fluffiness that makes them easy to spread, even when taken directly from a cold refrig erator. All of the new Kraft Whipped Cream Cheese products retain the delicate fresh cream cheese flavor that Kraft has achieved in Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese and Kraft Whipped Cream Cheese. An increase in overseas travel to the United States of nearly 18 for ihe first five months of 19B2 over 1961 was reported by the U. S. De partment of Commerce. From all overseas countries, 203,369 business and pleasure vis itors came to the U.S. during the period from January 1 to May 30. This is 30,513 more than last year. CULMINATING one of the most successful newspaper campaign? in their recent history, officials of Sunkist and Ardcn Farms Co. met recently at the Sheraton West Hotel in Los Angeles to award prizes in the heavily pub licized Sunkist Orange Juice Drink Contest by Ardcn Farms Co.
