Californians responded to the "Cuban situation" in a number of ways last week emotionally, physically and politically. One person immediately affected when President Ken nedy announced his naval "quarantine" of Cuba was Gov. Edmund G. Brown. Two days later, Brown also shelved all but a few of his remaining sched uled campaign appearances and flew to Washington, D C. for a governor's conference on the Cuban crisis. Meanwhile, Los Angeles shoppers jammed markets in a wild buying spree, coaxed by local civil defense offi cials' remarks that citizens should maintain a two-weeks supply of food. Brown called a meeting with his cabinet and high state officials to review Cali fornia's civil defense prepar edness. Afterward he said he found it "in good shape." Some other situations that developed from the crisis: Nixon Republican guber natoral candidate Richard M. Nixon said he backed Ken nedy's stand. He also said he would not alter his campaign because of the Cuban situa tion. He noted he did not hold a public office and therefore was not invited to Washing ton. Martin Joseph Martin Jr., Republican National commit teeman from California, said he believed the Cuban crisis would increase Nixon's "past position on the Cuban issue has proved correct," Martin said. Meeting A stale depart ment representative met with western congressmen in San Francisco for a briefing on the crisis. Demonstrations There were the expected pro and con demonstrations regarding Cuba, primarily by college and university students in the state's large population centers. Elsewhere, there were these developments: Endorsements There were two major political endorse ments. Harold J. (Butch) Powers, former Republican lieutenant governor, endorsed Democrat Gov. Edmund G. Brown for re-election. He ac cused Republican nominee Richard M. Nixon of failing to "come up with a single, soli tary program beneficial to California." In the other en dorsement, Roy E. Simpson, retiring state superintendent of public instruction, backed the candidacy of Dr.- Ralph Richardson for that post over Dr. Max Rafferty. Sleinbeeks Novelist John Steinbeck, who was born in Salinas. Calif., and wrote some of his best novels about that region, was named win ner of the 1962 Nobel Prize for literature. He was cited for his "realistic and imagi native" writings. Steinbeck, now 60, rose to fame in the 1930s with novels I and short stories that reflect- j ed the "common people'' and i the depressed economic con- j ditions of the age. Steinbeck j incorporated his home town j of Salinas and the California I cnunlrysirir into his faction, j "Tortilla Flat" was the first j of his successes. Yeigh, 39, said he could not remember exact ly what happened Oct. 17 when Terryl Lee Yeigh was killed. Her body was found hidden beneath her bed in one of two bedrooms at the family's apartment in Van Nuys. Kroeger: Mrs. Iva (Grand ma) Kroeger pleaded inno cent and innocent by reason of insanity to charges of mur dering Jay and Mildred Arne son, whose bodies were found in the basement of the Kroc ger's San Francisco home last August. Her husband, Ralph, entered a straight plea of innocent. Disaster: Nine northern California counties were de clared a major disaster area by President Kennedy as a result of recent storms and flooding. The counties were Alameda, Butte, Contra Costa, Modoc, Napa, San Mateo, Si erra, Sutler, and Yuba. The declaration made them eli gible for emergency federal grants. Bruce: Noted "sick" comic Lenny Bruce was arrested following his nightclub per formance in West Hollywood and charged with using ob scene language both in Eng lish and Yiddish - in his act. It marked the third arrest in three weeks for the 37-year-old comedian. Poole: U. S. Attorney Cecil F. Poole appologized to all federal judges in northern California for his remarks on the dismissal of three airline bomb hoax defendants. He had criticized the judges after three dismissals in as many weeks. On the Air By ELEANOR WIESE In a week of frightcninc, news and political specia's, "The River Nile" tonight at 10 p.m. on KM ED-TV should be an interesting change of pace. The program pictures the 4,000 mile long course of the river and describes the history that touches its banks. Starling on a high plateau in the Watusi country of East Africa, a 3-man news crew spent 84 days following the Station KRVC To Hold Rally For Anniversary Ashland R a d i o Station KRVC in Ashland will cele brate its second anniversary with a radio rally at the Faith Tabernacle at 3 o'clock this afternoon. According to the Rev. Leo C. Wine, pastor, speakers and musical talent from more than 13 valley churches will participate in the service. The 1,000-watt radio sta tion, operating daytime on 1350 kilocycles, is one of three stations in Oregon that carry all religious programs. Mr. Wine is slation man ager; Charlie McFarlan, news editor and chief announcer; Virgil Jackson, advertising manager, and Mrs. Jackson is the station's secretary. An nouncers include Carlton Ab bott and Richard Anderson. The Ashland church first entered the radio field about 10 years ago when it spon sored the 30-minute. six-day a week program "Voice of Deliverance" on a local sta tion. After five years it was discontinued due to a change of policy by the radio station. It was then that the church decided to make application for its own station. Nile.
