Newspaper Page TextMedford Takes On La Grande In Non-League Mix Tonight A skirmish of multiple loot ball offenses takes place this evening at the Medford sta dium. And, Fred Spiegelberg, Medford high head coach, said: "I hope it's a good offen sive game." Coach Ken Glore brings his La Grande Tigers here to tackle the Medford Black Tor nado. Kickofi' time is 8 p.m. This encounter is non-league. Both clubs utilize a multiple attack. This will be Medford's last home game of the regular sea son. If the Tornado should gain the District 6 champion ship, however, there is the possibility of two more home encounters. On the basis of record and rating and the strength of overall competition the Med ford griddcrs tonight take the field as favorites. The Tor nado carries the stale's No. 1 rating in all three prep foot ball polls. The Tigers are not rated. Lineup Changes Medford is unbeaten, un tied and unscored upon in five games. La Grande has won two games, lost a pair and tied one. Tornado footballers go into the tangle after a week mark ed by head-knocking scrim mages designed to produce maximum effort from the players. And, just before the Hurricanes had their final drill under lights last night, Spiegelberg announced some changes in the Medford offen sive starting lineup. The changes would have Jack Forde at left end, Dean Evernham at left guard, Gar ner Haupert at center, Ron Calkins at left halfback and Greg Gandee at right half back. Slated for opening duty at the other posts are Lloyd Hammons at right end, Gary Miller at right tackle, Jim Snodgrass at right guard, Jeff Hardrath at left tackle, Dan Miles at quarterback and Frank Van Pelt or Mike Wat kins at fullback. La Grande will have the Ouarterbacking and passing of Jodie Glore and Russ 3ow nian and the running of Frank Miller. John Hunts man, Bob Dallon and Dan Morris with Don Moore and Richard Waite at the pass receiving ends. Medford has Miles and Mike Ncathamer to guide its operations. Both can run and pars. There's the running of Calkins, Gandee, Van Pelt, Watkins, Tim Murray, Jack Lowery and Mike Barnes. Hammons, Forde and Mitch ell arc amonc receivers. Medford will have the size on the Tigers who are short on heft. Central Point 7th Faces Ashland Team Central Point-Central Point Junior high seventh grade football team will play the Ashland B Cubs on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Ashland. The Pointers trimmed the Ashland A Cubs in a Monday skirmish 21 to 7. Bob Bailey scored two touchdowns and three extra points. Doug Mil ler passed to Kerby Rcnfro for a score. Blacks Win Grid Title McLoughlin Junior High school Blacks won the Med ford seventh grade football title yesterday by defeating Hedrick Blues 7 to 0. The Blacks were unbeaten in four games and were un scored upon. Dan Cuddie went off tackle 20 yards for the touchdown and Steve Wilkins ran the extra point. TIPOFF TOURNEV Monmouth-ll'Pli-The fourth annual District 2 NAIA Tip off basket ball tournament will be held Nov. 29-Dcc. 1 at Lewis and Clark in Portland and Willamette in Salem. Two games will be held at each site the first two nights and the final games will be held at Salem. Scheduled to take part in the tournament are Portland State, Lewis and Clark, Pacific, Oregon Tech. Quakers Appeal For Negotiations Philadelphia -HOT- Appeals for negotiation of the Cuban crisis in the United Nations were made Thursday by the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) and more than 35 faculty mem bers of the University of Pennsylvania. In a statement, the Quaker group urged both Russia and the United States to heed the call of acting UN Secretary General Thant for a suspen sion of arms shipments and a naval blockade. This would be the "course of statesman ship" not weakness, the Quak ers said. The faculty members sent a telegram to President Ken nedy calling for both sides to negotiate the Cuban crisis in the United Nations. Mississippi Group Fights Integration Oxford, Miss. - 11'PH - A stu dent group calling itself the "Rebel Underground" vowed Thursday night to "resist by every effective means . . . brotherhood by bayonet" at the University of Mississippi. In handbills circulated throughout the campus, the group said it was serving "notice to the forces of inte gration that we have only be gun to fight." The handbills said the "Rebel Underground" was composed of students who re sented Negro student James H. Meredith being forced into t h c university by federal might. Meredith's admission to "Ole Miss" Sept. 30 touch ed off 14 hours of rioting in which two persons were kill ed and hundreds injured. A St. Mary's high victory over Eagle Point and Phoenix decision over Henley would give the crown to St. Mary's. The Crusaders of Medford are 5-0 in the loop. Henley 4-1, Phoenix 3-1-1 , and Eagle Point 2-1-1, are all in the running for the title and will battle to slay in the thick of the chase. At Eagle Point, where the kickoff is at 8 p.m., this is the feeling of the Eagles: "We're definitely still in the running and have to win to slay in." Coach Vern Steward has said further, "If we can get our offense going and keep them from scoring too many, we'll give them a good bat tle." He indicated the feeling that, if there is one big factor that may make the difference in the game, it may be the St. Mary's speed. Pomeroy Heads Eagles Charles Pomeroy leads Ea gle Point rushing with 175 yards in 48 carries. Bob Hen derson has 123 for 39, Mike House 1(19 for 23, Dale Cham berlain 63 for 24 and Bob Col- pilts BO for 20. Henderson and Bob Corliss each have com pleted seven of 19 passes. Hen derson for 99 yards and Cor liss for 84. Pomeroy has received five passes for 69 yards and Cham berlain five for 62. Bill Hoefft has caught two for 74 yards. Chamberlain heads scoring with 18 points and Pomeroy is next with 13. Top Tackier Chamberlain heads tacklcrs with 49 plus eight assists. Pomeroy has 35. Some clue to the future will be provided on Saturday night at the Medford stadium. Freshman grid teams of the state two "big time" schools will be adversaries in their first of two meetings of this fall. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Some of the tup ex-prep talent from Oregon and Cali fornia make up the bulk of both squads. Each school has a number of fine players from other slates. Each of the schools has a good combination of size and speed. Oregon's Ducklings will utilize the backfield abilities of Jack Sovereign, Dennis Keller, Bud Harrington and Mike Flury in their top line backfield along wlih the pass catching of ends Ray Palm and Barry K. Klein. Palm and Flury were teammates on Roseburg's 1961 6tate titular team. Fina Passer The Rooks will start with the talents of Marv Crowston, Jim Smith, Tim Osmcr and Craig Cording in the back field and Doug Parker and Mike Sullivan at the flanks. U of O reports list Sover eign as a fine passer and good runner. He connected on nine of 20 passes for 123 yards against the Washington Stale Coubabes last week. He is al so a baseball pitcher. Keller is termed very quick and strong. In spring he is a pole vaultcr. The Frosh have the game's biggest backfield man in Bud Harrington. This right half back is 6-2 and 223 pounds, lie can play end and was a (.rep fullback. Flury is an ex cellent blocker and a two time all stater. Palm was a prep all-Amcr- ican. He impressed win his high pass catching and de fense in the opener. Klein is lough on defense and a fair pass receiver.
