OCTOBER 25, 1962 Number of W Students at OSU Increases Greatly Corvallis-Oregon State uni versity's new record enroll ment of 10,032 this fall came 1 more from increases in "old" i students than "new," a report compiled by the registrar's of- i fice shows. j The number of new fresh- j men, transfer and graduate students (3,764) is up 4 per! cent over a year ago, but the number of "old" students (6,268) those who have at tended OSU in a previous year is up a record 16 per cent. More students than ever be fore are back to continue their education, Registrar, Wallace Gibbs said. : And to Gibbs and other university leaders who are deeply concerned about the giant "dropout" problem among U.S. college students, the.' stay in college" increase 3s highly encouraging. These increases will then carry through the next decade. ; The combination of more new and old students will al most double the number of students attending O r e g o n public colleges in 1072, enroll ment projections now indi cate. : OSU's enrollment this fall is almost exactly 1,000 more thar a year ago. New student gains over a year ago account for 151 of the total and in creases in the number of old students, 846 over 1961. The 1962 enrollment estimate for OSU, on which the biennial budget was based two years ago, was 8,345. Just As Capable A-study made In 1961 at Oregon State university on drop out of students showed that "more than half of the students who drop out of col lege are just as capable acad emically as the ones who graduate." The study was made by Dallas Norton, per sonnel coordinator and direc tor of admissions, and Rich ard F. Link, statistics profes sor. They compared college en trance examination scores, ap titude and proficiency tests, college grade performance and related measures of stu dents who do-and don't-grad-uate. "The fact that only about half of the brightest high school graduates go on to col lege has drawn wide comment and concern, but the tremend ous and often needless drop out of capable college stu dents before they get their degrees is equally tragic," Norton and Link reported.
