Nobel Winner Objects To Kennedy's Decision Pasadena, Calif. (UPD Dr. Linu Pauling, 1954 Nobel prize winner in chemistry, wired a strenuous objection to President Kennedy Monday night, decrying his "war-like act" in the Cuban situation. Flemming Is Author of ArticleNoting Physical Fitness Need Eugene A magazine article by University of Oregon President Arthur S. Flem ming concerning physical fit' ness of youth points up the necessity for physical fitness programs in high schools, ac cording to Dr. H. Harrison Clarke, research professor of physical education at the university. Dr. Clarke was recently ap pointed a professional proj ects consultant to President Kennedy's Council on Youth Fitness. President Flemming's article on physical fitness ap pears in the October issue of Good Housekeeping maga zine. Dr. Clarke said Presi dent Flemming's article should be read carefully in Oregon because in recent years physical education has not been required in the 11th and 12th grades in Oregon high schools. Freshmen Tested In the fall of 1961. Dr. Clarke said, all University of Oregon and Oregon State uni versity entering freshmen were tested with standard physical fitness tests. Of those who graduated from Oregon high schools the pre preceding June, contrasts were made, between those who participated and those who did not participate in physical education in the jun ior and senior years, he said. Dr. Clarke listed the results as: 1. They were far below the averages of those who had County May Heat Beekman Home County Commissioner Ches ter Wendt indicated yesterday the Jackson county court would help finance installs tion of a heating unit in the C. C. Beekman house and ap ply for renewal of the lease for four years. Wendt said the county court understood the Siskiyou Pio neer Sites Foundation would obtain donations for installa tion of a heating unit. The Sites Foundation is act ing as custodial agency for the Beekman home. The county has leased the home from its owner, the University of Ore gon, for one year ending July 1, 1963. Both Wendt and County Judge Earl M. Miller noted that "public response to the home has been good." Since it opened on Memo rial Day, 5,508 paid admis sions were received at the house and total receipts were $2,274.15. The house has been self-supporting by paying for all expenses includinj; lights and water and the salaries of the two adults and five young women of Jacksonville who conduct tours through the home, the Sites Foundation noted. Parents should think twice Pear Shippers Bid In Lunch Program Medford area pear shippers and growers submitted bids on pears for the school lunch program to the federal gov ernment Monday afternoon A spokesman said they hope to hear by Saturday if their bids are acceptable. Due to government regulations, they are unable to disclose the price they submitted or the number of carloads of pears which would come un der the United States Depart ment of Agriculture surplus foods program. The Rogue Valley Market ing association, which repre sents local pear shippers, first met on the proposal Friday afternoon. They met again yesterday to make a final de cision and work out the de tails of the bid. Meanwhile, several pack ing houses were completing packing operations last night or today except for some gift pack operations. Dr. Clarke pointed out that in, the spring of 1961 all boys and girls in the Coos Bay pub lic schools from the fourth grade through high school were tested for physical fit ness, and that averages for those in the 11th and 12th grades were much lower than for any other grades in the school system, and were espe cially low as related to Ore gon state norms. In Coos Bay physical education classes are now scheduled for pupils in the 11th and 12th grades. Suptrior In Fitntis Dr. Clarke also described a University of Oregon study which showed that 12-year-old boys in Eugene who had par ticipated in good elementary school physical education pro grams had pronounced superi ority on physical fitness tests compared to those who parti cipated in poor programs. He also described a re search project under his di rection in the Medford pub lic schools which tested boys annually at each age from nine to 15 years old.
