During a quick scan ning I spotted a John A. west Kennedy run ning in Illinois, a Richard D. Kennedy in Ohio, and a John F. Kennedy in Rhode Island, not to mention an Edward M. Kennedy in Massachusetts. Curiously, all of these Ken nedys, except the one in Rhode Island, are Democrats. Curiously, too. there are no Kennedys presently in Con gress. It is therefore difficult to escape a conclusion that there is something about the name that has come to be regarded as politically advantageous. All I know is that the President has been travel ling about the country and that wherever he goes the Democratic candidates sing lhe following song: "K is for kind words he said about us; "E is for endor. ents that he gave; "N's are for his nods of sweet approval; "E is for elections he may save; "D is for our districts that he spoke in; "Y is for the yelling that we shared; "Put them all together they spell coattails, "A word that means we're running scared." This sort nf thine hanDcns in the Republican party, too, as the list makes clear. In Ha- , waii, for instance, one of the i GOP candidates is a Richard Sutton. Note that carefully. The candidate's name is Richard but he doesn't use "Dick" for a nickname. He uses "Ike." This, of course, is not necessarily significant, even in California. In Kansas, there is a candi date named Shrivcr. which al so has a familiar ring. But since ho is a Republican, I doubt he will try to take ad vantage of it. In fact, if Shrivcr went in for name-dropping. I have a hunch he would drop his own. of Candidates' Names Forthcoming Election ine unio ivenneay, inciaen tally, is running against a Re publican named Robert Taft. In California, there is, natur ally, a Roosevelt. And in Tex as, there is a Hoover. My only regret is thai the second district Democratic candidate in Minnesota isn't running against the Democra tic candidate at large in Mary land. Then we would have had Hammar against Sickles. Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS (Register md Tribune Syndicate 1962) Great New Travel Idea 'Look, Daddy, No Trees" Having heard so much about it, the vacationing fam ily looked forward to driving the new super highway . . . anticipating the thrill of fast driving without the ever- present danger or apprenen sion of watching for cross traffic coming in from side roads. The total absence of traffic lights was going to be a new and pleasant ex perience. They were mildly excited when the "divided highway ahead" sign alerted them; they were about to enter the expressway. Suddenly the road broadened. They looked ahead. The ribbons of con crete seemed to disappear in the far distance. The tires hummed. They were highball ing at 65 miles per hour. The summer sun was beat ing relentlessly on the pave ment and it was hot in the car. The miles rolled away from beneath the car. Huge green and white signs desig nated an exit a mile ahead, or indicated a town to tne right or left. The curves were long and protected along the outer edge with miles of steel fence especially designed to keep out-of-control cars i r o m plunging over the embank ment The family and their car became a tiny unit of a continuous stream ol cars ana trucks, all hurrying toward the far horizon. No Trees Probably the family had been half-conscious of some thing a little strange about the expressway for some time. But it was one of the children who put it in words PRESCRIPTIONS! when he said, "Look, Daddy, no trees." Nnt nnlv was there a com plete absence of trees along side the road for at least a half mile but there were no bushes, no grass, no nothing Knl riirprtinnal signs and some billboards. An occasion al oil station perched on a flat section of land, but around it nnl a tree as the hot sun beat down with fierce intensity. The worst irony or all, per haps, was the single roadside table they found. For several miles they had read the signs "ten miles, five miles, one mile to roadside table." It was there; two. to be exact, complete with attached seats and a pair of green garbage barrels. Thev were set up on a small flat area just off the road, and all right in the di rect sun. Not a shade tree, not 1 a bush, flower or blade of grass. j They pulled off the express- ; way onto the area. The pave ment radiated heat. A blue haze of exhaust smoke was constantly stirred up by i heavy trucks following each other in an almost steady stream. The ground shook; it was impossible to remain. The family resumed the trip. , Well-Engineered j They traveled 120 miles, ' where a few billboards took the place of scenery. This, . they had been told, was a well-engineered highway . . . a high speed expressway . . . j a road of the future, some misguided person called it. It had no hazards, and not a shade tree, bush or grass clump. The family agreed this was "progress" with all the stops pulled. The motoring public can travel fast without the inconvenience of traffic lights or cross roads. But the idea will have to be to arrive. It will be no fun going.
